1. Happening all over the country, in various ways.
Throw away dogs, throw away people, throw away jobs.

Our civilization is collapsing, that is not an exaggeration.

10. No its not (an exaggeration) Civilizations do several things when this happens
1 - Do like Rome and change the State religion.

2 - Do like France/Rome/Spain and bring back the King

3 - Regroup (e.g. instead of "America" one is a "Californian" or even "San Franciscan"

4 - Dissolve

5 - Massive civil war

Let's hope its #3

4. I used to work out in the sticks
people would just drive out there, dump their dogs and drive away. One day I found a beautiful german sheppard sitting on the side of the road next to a sign that said "I need a home" ( Think about how well trained that dog had to have been) I took it home.

I wish there was a realistic way of keeping animals out of the hands of idiots like that.

Mandatory spaying and neutering of all mixed breed dogs would be a start

5. Agree with you there! Some dogs are just so loyal, you tell them
to stay and they will STAY. Poor baby. Did you keep him then?

All my pets (3) were adopted, abandoned strays. 2 are cats, one was beat, abandoned, declawed and is very shy - after 2yrs he has come out of his shell, goes to bed when I do (at my feet), plays in the garden and has fun with the young female we adopted when our neighbors abandoned her. She was desexed at 3mo's of age.
Then there is our dog. He had several owners until he came to us. He has spent 6yrs with us and was 5 when we got him.

All these animals came with warnings. The declawed one liked to spray "are you sure you can take him in?" (yes, and he doesnt spray but does in the garden, NEVER inside) The neighbours always thought the kitten was weird (she isnt very 'loving' but you have to know her) and our dog? Well I guess he used to poop on the floor at night so we were warned to kennel him at night.

A couple of times I forgot too and he never had an accident. (unless I slept in way to late, then he has had one or two on the concrete of the utiliy room. He knows at least to get as close to the door as possible. in 6 yrs he's done that twice).

We will continue to adopt as our guys get older. 3 however is more than enough animals in one home - at least this one.

Cheers
sandy

7. All those dogs on Detroit's streets will pack too
So many of them are pits (which are good dogs, raised properly but as packed, hungry strays....yikes).

I believe in always Spay and Neuter. Our little girl was tossed out like you mentioned. Literally. Then they moved within 2 months of us having her. The effect declawing of our adopted male can be seen in him all the time. He pretends to use the wood scratching post outside that "little girl" uses (her nick name, being the youngest) and he is the size of a medium dog. HUGE. Reminds me of the story Ferdinand - smelling flowers - totally innocent.

He is very nervous and really unsure of being able to 'jump' up when outside. I've coached him and he'll do it and be all surprised with him self. Florida it's still legal to declaw your cat. We didnt adopt him for that reason but because he was the saddest cat in the shelter. He didnt want any attention at all. Found out he'd been there 2ys and adopted out once, but brought back. Thus his "spray" reputation. However, he only does that outside, once in a while. He loves the garden and he loves being able to go out there with me. He was never allowed outside because he was declawed. Poor lovey.

We take in the broken, neurotic animals and they level out with us. I have also taken in and rehab'ed pit bulls. My animals can tell when I am doing rehab, they are very sweet to the rehab'ed animals, lord forbid a puppy visits tho!

Cheers
Sandy

I have three cats...all de-clawed. They are not skittish, scared, or traumatized. All my cats have great dispositions and a good life.

19. That is the most important message of all! Spay and neuter. . .if you love your pet,
and if you have a heart.
I have even trapped a real wild cat who had a litter in my wood pile in California. I trapped the mother (after the kitten began eating the food I left for them), and had her spayed. She wasn't happy!. . .the Vet warned me to keep her "quiet" for 48 hours. . .but she managed to escape her kennel within one hour of bringing her home! But she kind of stayed around, I left food for her and her kitten. . .then it was the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, and one of the kitten died. The mother disappeared, and we adopted the last kitten. . . we had him neutered, and he stayed with us for 14 years before he died also.. . .he was always skiddish, but also very loving and purring when we managed to pick him up! We loved him.

Now we have a dog that we got from a rescue center. Best thing we ever did! He travels with us to Europe every year when we go visit my family for a couple of months. . .he is small enough to fit under my feet on the plane, and he loves being able to sit at terrasses in Europe. . .the waiters always bring a bowl of fresh water and sometime a treat, even before we order our drinks!

I will NEVER again get a pet from any place but a rescue or SPCA center. . .and I will NEVER own a pet that isn't spayed or neutered. . .there are too many unwanted animals!

And I only ever will. I can't imagine why someone would spend hundreds of dollars for a "perfect" animal when I've had many more than perfect ones from shelters!!

24. +1000
I've had eight dogs in my life, including the one who's lying next to me as a type this. I adopt senior dogs from rescue, all wonderful dogs whom I loved dearly, but they all came with heartbreaking stories. And all but one of them were purebred. I have a soft spot for cocker spaniels, since I grew up with one. ;(

22. Not just mixed breeds! (Spayed and neutered)
I think it's disgusting that AKC dogs are bred while mixed breeds (and purebreds too) are euthanized or homeless. If all the dog shows went out of business tonight, I would cheer. I can see breeding purebreds for specific work purposes. That's it.

If you gotta have a purebred (other than one you got at the shelter), if you gotta have a puppy (an adult dog just will not do, no matter how much it needs a home), if you gotta have a dog you *bought* (as opposed to adopted), you're part of the problem, according to me.

Of course I realize that if they all were spayed and neutered we wouldn't have any dogs, but realistically I don't think that would happen. Too many irresponsible people in the world, breeding and dumping dogs for the responsible people to adopt.

From a dog parent who topped out at eight, all from the shelter or dumped in our (rural) neighborhood.

8. Stray dogs form packs
Packs will hunt people.

This was a problem near where I grew up, packs of dogs chasing and attacking people because they're hungry. There's a reason we have shelters, spay/neuter programs, etc. They're as much for human protection as for the animals.

Cost cutting for these programs is short sighted and foolish. I just hope it doesn't take a couple of dead 1st graders for politicians to figure it out.

20. Feral dogs packs are the worst
I live on 120 acres and raise sheep, pastured poultry, and rabbits. We live in the land of coyotes, cougars, and bears (Oh My!!) and have a couple of dogs who do a great job keeping us safe.

To be honest with you, we only worry about two 4-legged predators, dog/coyote hybrids and feral dog packs. They both share one important characteristic, neither has any fear of humans. The hybrids have coyote cunning and no fear, bad news. The feral packs get desperate and have no fear, worse news.

Feral dog packs in the country are bad but we can control them by shooting them. Feral dog packs in the city are a disaster waiting to happen. Just one more aspect of our country becoming a giant Potterville.

9. In the mid seventies in Detroit there was a stray dog problem
I remember in the Cass Corridor and to the west to 12th st, having to walk in the street because of packs of dogs and thieves hiding in the weeds. You always had to have your hand on your piece, ready to defend yourself from four or two leg predators.

14. One thing Detroit Has Been Doing is...
I've noticed that Detroit has been steadily plowing under abandoned homes. There is a lot more open space between the homes and businesses this discourages crime. Go do a Goggle Map search of the Detroit inner city.

I used to live in Mt Clemens, just north of Detroit (about 21 mile road). I haven't been back in years.
