2010-12-01 CONFIDENTIAL Embassy Madrid SPAIN: ATTORNEY GENERAL RECOMMENDS COURT NOT PURSUE GTMO CRIMINAL CASE VS. FORMER USG OFFICIALS http://wikileaks.ch/cable/2009/04/09M...

One of the just released cables obtained by WikiLeaks sent from the US Embassy in Madrid to the State Department details how in its first months in office, the Obama administration sought to protect Bush administration officials facing criminal investigation overseas for their involvement in establishing policies that governed interrogations of detained terrorist suspects. The document says the Obama administration, working with Republicans, leaned on Spain to derail this potential prosecution.

7. Obama's actions make him complicit in torture
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 03:46 PM by youmayberight
When Ronald Reagan signed the Convention Against Torture, which was later ratified by the Senate, he said: "The core provisions of the Convention establish a regime for international cooperation in the criminal prosecution of torturers relying on so-called 'universal jurisdiction.' Each State Party is required either to prosecute torturers who are found in its territory or to extradite them to other countries for prosecution."

Article 12 of the Convention Against Torture reads: "Each State Party shall ensure that its competent authorities proceed to a prompt and impartial investigation, wherever there is reasonable ground to believe that an act of torture has been committed in any territory under its jurisdiction."

By his actions, President Obama is complicit in the underlying crimes. Maybe he will have to limit his travels abroad, as these six and others have been forced to do.

This was said at the time, and was shouted down by people who said that it didn't apply, and Obama had a strategy and knew what he was doing, etc.

Well, the torture has continued, and now we are torturing an American. Obama has claimed the right to Assassinate even American Citizens anywhere in the world, even without the US, that means without a trial, if there are merely accused of being involved in Terrorist Activities. That goes totally against the whole idea of restoring the rule of law. We have reports that Torture still remained routine in Iraq and Afghanistan as of not too long ago, and also turning people over to local forces to be tortured.

And, yes, we still haven't done anything to prosecute the past instances of authorizing and promoting torture, even though Bush and Cheney admitted it on national Television.

Obama's administration is very much in violation of this Convention. They were then, and still are now. I wonder when we are going to start seeing what that supposed Chess Strategy is. :(

could possibly say about this.

I's obvious the emperor has no clothes but we've got some pretty imaginative people on this site.

Mr. President, disappointment doesn't even come close to what I think of your administration.

11. Obama is no friend of the people..........
He is better than the ilks of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bachman, Delay, etc. but at the core of it he loves power.

People in power love to exercise their ability to dominate, abuse and humiliate those that are subservient to them. So of course Obama thinks torture is grand. Despite his protestations and public proclamations that we don't torture, we know that torture and extraordinary renditions have continued on his watch.

Obama is no Christian, at least not a follower of the Christ of the Bible when he condones torture and discrimination (defense of DOMA).

He is the lesser of the evils but what a choice to make....

31. So what is the motive
for the Obama Administration protecting the Bush Administration?

Why, after all the horrible rhetoric directed toward Obama, would Obama do this? I mean, these are real crimes by the Bush Administration. Not enforcing the law serves to make torture acceptable. This is dereliction of duty.

37. David Addington was the most openly defiant
of them all during his Congressional Oversight testimony. He should have been investigated just out of principle.

As for Holder's decision not to pursue it, I am sure that was Obama's first question to him when he was considering him for AG. Had he done anything about it, Obama would either have selected someone else or respectfully instructed Holder to let it go.
