"We put those payroll contributions there so as to give the contributors a legal, moral, and political right to collect their pensions . . . . With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my social security program."

- President Franklin D. Roosevelt

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

- President Dwight D. Eisenhower

"Further, and very importantly, Social Security has not contributed one penny to the very serious deficit situation we face. Social Security is fully funded by the payroll tax that workers and their employers contribute. Our deficit has, in recent years, been largely caused by the cost of two wars, tax breaks for the rich, a Medicare prescription drug program written by the insurance and pharmaceutical industries, and the Wall Street bailout -- all unpaid for. Social Security has played no role.

There are two reasons why has there been such a concerted effort to privatize Social Security, raise the retirement age or cut benefits. First, Wall Street stands to make billions in profits if workers must take retirement accounts to private firms. Second, as the Republican Party has moved to the right and become much more anti-government, more and more Republican members of Congress simply do not believe government has a responsibility to provide retirement benefits to the elderly or help for those with disabilities."
