There are untold graphs and charts that have tracked the progress of human population with increasing accuracy during the eras of hte Industrial Revolution and Modern Era. Coal at first, and oil that followed, helped grow food supplies by a great amount and thus, with an easier to acquire supply of food world populations began to soar. You can see this happen with a bowl of yeast and I think, sugar to feed it with. The yeast eats the sugar and multiplies, the abundance in the bowl creates a massive population that hten soon dies out as the food becomes more and more scarce and their effluence (alcohol) begins destroying them.
I've no doubt that panicking elites will see our near 7 billion population and desire a reduction through subtle or not-so-subtle methods, but overpopulation is no myth. Overpopulation is a state where a populous grows to outstrip the resources within an area, well beyond their ability to renew. It's occured on places such as Easter Island and in the deserts of...New Mexico I believe, a particular tribe that lived there long ago.
There are many factors to a population's climb, with cheap food, easily accessable water, and cheap and energy being chief among them.
There are also many factors to a populations decline, with lack of food, scarce water and expensive energy being chief among them. The only thing to surpass this, at least in speed, would be a virulant plague or war. To quote Thomas Hobbes "When all the world is overcharged with inhabitants, then the last remedy of all is war, which provideth for every man, by victory or death."
We needn't come to drastic measures, We don't have to kill off millions. And if we can educate people on the seriousness of this, something as crazy as putting sterilizers into food and water supplies won't be needed.
There are ways around it. Ways no one wants to here. Many religious tell us children are so sacred, that to share in that blessedness we must have them, and many of them. We are taught by the powers that be that there is only one good. Growth.
This must be changed and the word "Sustain" or "Sustainability." Must become the new norm.
