One second equals one hour. The big one is around 1.17.

1. As someone noted on youtube, the lack of quakes before the bg one.
I am sure this kind of thing is well studied, but it seems that energy was built up in that time and released at once.

2. That is amazing!
I hope it calms down really soon. I saw video last night or the night before of a crack in a road that was opening and closing repeatedly and very rapidly. It's no wonder with all the seismic activity!

3. Very interesting. The fairly long pause before the 8.9 was

especially interesting.

What I'm wondering about, though, is the triple junction of the Philippine and Eurasian plate, where they both override the Pacific plate. That looks to me like it could have the potential for an even larger earthquake if the Pacific plate slips under both. There were a bunch of little quakes around that area during the swarm. It just looks potentially explosive, somehow.

It is fascinating to see the various ways of presenting the scale.

9. and 8 quakes in the past 4 days near the New Madrid fault line
in Arkansas. Some in Texas and Oklahoma, too.

California has not had the most devastating quake in this country. That would have been the New Madrid quakes of 1811/1812.

8. Mariana trench
Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 09:42 PM by SemperEadem
that deep gash where the Philippine and Pacific plates seem to meet the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in the ocean. I wonder, since the Pacific plate is sliding under the Philippine (or Mariana) plate if Japan as a whole rose in altitude as a result?

10. I heard somewhere that Japan did indeed widen during this event. Can't
tell you where I heard it but it was on one of the TV news channels.
