Tripoli Shock: Minders Snatch 'Rape Victim'

3:17pm UK, Saturday March 26, 2011

Lisa Holland, foreign affairs correspondent

A shocking scene occurred in Tripoli on Saturday when a gun was pointed at Sky News after a woman tried to tell foreign journalists about being raped and tortured by Libyan officials.

A visibly very distressed woman burst into the breakfast room of the hotel where we are staying and attempted to speak out about an ordeal at the hands of Gaddafi supporters.

As correspondents here in Tripoli under the supervision of the Libyan government, we are not allowed to move around freely. However, it has become apparent to those in the city that there are a clutch of journalists in two hotels.

We were having breakfast in our hotel when the woman broke in and said she'd been picked up at a checkpoint in the city.

2. Interesting, have you got any more details on that?
If true, and this video gets seen by the rest of the tribe, Gaddafi is toast.

6. People, especially women, who speak out against injustice are ALWAYS "mentally ill".
In Russia, in the US, and obviously, also in the ME.

ENOUGH!

7. Kucinich and Cindy Sheehan would say "Not our problem, let them all be raped before...

...American acts"

Great Humanitarians they are.

8. If I were standing ther, I would have punched that guy in the face.
Ditto if I were the camera man who got the hand over the lense. Why do the reporters just let this shit happen? they can't arrest all of you. If you all stand together, they (the thugs) are massivly out numbered.

9. The reporter who tried to help got kicked out of Libya by Gaddafi.
Charles Clover of the Financial Times. Seems some of Clover's previous reports had already displeased Gaddafi for what were called "inaccuracies".

Nic Robertson is staying on the story, other reporters probably are too. People are intense about this on Twitter and Facebook, they are putting pressure on the hotel as well.

I don't see this going away at all.

I have to mention that Anita McNaught wasn't there and, at the time of making this report, can't have seen the footage of the "waitress" trying to put a bag over her head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c44Exz46Ymw
