1. Thom
As usual, Thom is brilliant!

He doesn't regurgitate history. He goes out and hunts it down on his own. Sometimes finding stuff that had escaped history for many decades or centuries.

Like his legal proof on the fallacy of corporate personhood.

44. Was gonna be snarky here but
Naahhhh, just a warm welcome to DU.

Where we are all preaching to our choir and hoping that that will somehow foment some kind of change somewhere in America someday.

Here's how lil' ole' me tries to do that; By reading DU, I become better informed with FACTS and other little known CORRECT INFORMATION. I try to share that info one on one with many who I deal with in my life. Sometimes the Stop and Shop bag-boys that I try to educate regards me as a middle aged creep, but I do engage minds some times.

One of the most impressive things when I engage people on the street is just how well informed most Americans in northwest Connecticut really know just how much their own government is hosing them!

I am so ready to hop on any collective movement out there to fight this creeping fascism. The Wisconsin stuff is Egypt for the oppressed workers of America! Also known as the repressed BOTTOM 98% of us!

Our only hope is each other! Our elected reps consider us expendable chattel.

2. Thanks for the truth Thom
As usual, the "poor" Tea partiers have no idea what they are for, or against. They are doing what their corporate masters tell them to.

3. YOU are the man Thom
and what a find in that book. Shows just how manipulated people in this country can be by corporate deception.
Yes the Bostonians were smuggling in Dutch tea. The East India Company was about to go belly up because of it. So Parliament decided to cut the export tax but keep the import one to America. Undercutting the Dutch tea. And yes they disguised themselves as Indians something today's pretend tea parties have altogether missed.

They were standing against a corporate monopoly with Parliament as their lobbyist.
Sounds kinda liberal doesn't it.

DU had a discussion about a year ago.

You're gonna spoil their party! The Tee Partie, that is (purposely misspelt, as that seems to be required MO with the TP) Thanks SO MUCH for spelling this out and bringing this obscure citizen of US history to light.

Really, Really Great work, Thom!!!

Edited on Sun Apr-03-11 08:53 AM by JHB
The early 19th Century prose ad style make for slow going. It's the sort of book that takes a while to read, and even longer to read throgh and then reread the portions that touch on this aspect.

In the video you can see how many page-marker tabs Thom has added on the pages of the book he's holding. It's not easy reading.

9. George Robert Twelve Hewes didn't write the book according to Wikipedia -- still a great story
RediscoveryThe 1830s were a period when the American Revolution experienced a revival in the public memory. Battles and events from the revolution were being newly commemorated.<8> During this period, in 1833, a writer named James Hawkes discovered Hewes in Richfield Springs and wrote a biography about him, A Retrospect of the Boston Tea-Party.

19. interesting read..
Curious that he lived to be somewhere around a hundred years old, give or take a few.. considering he lived in poverty all of his life, indeed had to work a trade he hated.. that was a long life in those times, irony that he met his end by an accident on the 4th of july..

28. Wonderful! Can't wait to hear my rabid tea partier father's reaction to this
I thought through the various angles and possible tap-dancing the modern baggers might offer in response; and I just can't see how they can worm their way out of this.

They certainly can't claim an irrelevance of the past...what with all the revolutionary talk and 3 corner hat colonial garb the standard bearers wear.

They sure as hell can't claim the "cause" is the same...that today's corporatist stance is as grass roots as the original tea partiers.

It will force die-hard teabaggers today to admit they are actually Koch brothers minions and just ditch the whole "give me liberty or give me death" angle and come clean as theocratic corporatists.

Also interesting would be the quandary of them seeing the link on Russia Today ( Oh my! ) by Thom Hartmann ( they'll doubtless Google him and attempt to discredit him as a leftist/pinko/commie ) and yet have ulcers knowing the book and account by Hughes is real.

I guess there's always the sticking fingers in their ears and yelling option.....

Yee Haw. This oughtta be fun.

30. This explains why Thom's more recent
segment with the Leader of the Tea Party and his repeated statement of "we have more in common that we have differences". If Tea Party people embrace the true history of the Tea Party, then indeed we do have a of a lot in common.

35. The Revolutionary War began as a boycott and protest AGAINST a corporation.
Guess who owned most of the stock of the East India Tea Company?

The royals of England.

Corporations were charters given out by the King. That's how they started, They are still charted by states. We should be controlling the Corporations and they should NOT be controlling us.

46. It was about crony capitalism
and corrupt corporatism then just as now. That book was quite a find.

I still believe and will suggest again that we have enough in common with the real Tea Party (see Howard Deans last of three Party description http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/monitor_breakfast/2011/0105/Howard-Dean-tea-party-is-last-gasp-of-generation-that-fears-diversity) that we could legitimately piggyback on their rallies and demonstrations.

Take advantage of their organization, advertising and use our own slogans and signs such as .....

End outsourcing
Fair trade now,
End crony capitalism
Tax the corporations that we bailed out
End our wars for empire
End international influence on our government,
End the Fed
Audit the Fed
End foreign aid to rich nations
Honest elections with paper receipts
Wealthy should pay taxes too
