High level of cesium detected in sand lances

NHK
Tuesday, April 05, 2011 18:58 +0900 (JST)

Small fish caught in waters off the coast of Ibaraki have been found to contain radioactive cesium above the legal limit.

Ibaraki is south of Fukushima prefecture, where the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is located.

Ibaraki Prefecture says 526 becquerels of radioactive cesium was detected in one kilogram of sand lances. The acceptable limit is 500 becquerels. It is the first time that higher-than-permitted levels of radioactive cesium have been found in fish.

All local fishery cooperatives in the prefecture have agreed to suspend sand lance fishing at the request of the prefectural government.

4. I know, I saw that.....
...and I can't even come close to understanding the kind of mindset one must have to be that far into denial about this deadly poisonous crap! Unless, of course, someone is actively involved in the creation of power from radioactive materials. That at least I can understand. Self-interest and/or maybe a little bit of rationalizing in a vain attempt to cover over likely feelings of guilt one must have for the irreparable damage one must do each day to Mother Earth.

But until we stop damaging the planet and each other, I don't see much hope for the human race. We can't keep pushing everything to the brink and think we're gonna keep skating by. In the end, somebody has to pay for what we do. And unfortunately it's gonna be our children and their kids.

And all because of what?

- Arrogance and greed.....

5. Some people, esp. in this country, are of the opinion that reality is negotiable
this is, if they think something or have an opinion, reality must obviously comfort to support it.

I know that arguments to authority are pointless in an anonymous forum. But the level of denial is such, that I have actually being lectured on nuclear physics using silly pro-nuclear talking points by people who most likely had substandard grades in high school science classes (disclaimer: I have a graduate degree in electrophysics). I honestly don't know if it is just plain arrogance, or some denial self defense mechanism when reality becomes too unmanageable to some.

I don't know what part of "one of the biggest nuclear plants in the world being severely structurally compromised" they are having trouble parsing when trying to grasp the seriousness of this situation. Yes, it may or may not be "as bad as Chernobyl" but that is not the god damned point.

6. denial is a common reflex
when "impossible" disasters occur often people just can't see it. They are blind to it, literally. They've got no way to incorporate it. I've had the experience myself and I would have thought I was not inclined to self-deception.

Also the complexity of what is occurring gives people excuses not to pay attention. "Too complicated" I can understand. But the downplaying in the media is interpreted as-- "no news" = "less important." After Katrina & Deepwater Horizon, etc, that makes me MORE worried. "No news" is not good news anymore.

7. No one likes admitting that they're wrong.
When I was a kid they had documentaries and programs they showed us in school and on teevee about how nuclear power was too cheap to meter. And how we would have atomic cars and houses with their own power sources -- soon. They were still setting off above-ground atomic bombs in Nevada and elsewhere and I innocently breathed in the air along with who knows what the hell else.

We were taught how to "protect" ourselves by climbing under our desks at school or falling into the sewer if need be, if you were caught outside during an atomic bomb attack. And we'd be just fine. Just brush-off your clothes and continue on your way home to watch Leave It To Beaver. This is the atmosphere in which I grew up and how this madness took hold. And it didn't release it from that hold until Three- Mile Island. But now "they" want to poison us some more with this same craziness, and those who are invested in it have the worst form of cognitive-bias that I've seen in a while.

- This madness must end.......
