2. Am I the only one in favor of Pepper Spraying 8 year olds? |

Any one I come across is fair game! I would also include Gretchen Carlson and would spray her several times.

8. Given the right exceptional circumstances, yes I'd condone the use... |
|
...of pepper spray (or taser, etc) on a kid.
A temper tantrum alone wouldn't do it, but throwing knives at other kids would certainly see me getting their attention with ANYTHING that lay to hand including a 1/2 brick in a sock.

9. Your reply may be tongue in cheek, but in this instance I'm in favor of the cops use of Pepper Spray |
|
Normally I feel like we are devolving into a police state, and I can't stand police brutality. In this instance, however, I feel that pepper spray was the safest way to handle the situation for both the cops and the kid.
Fact: The kid had a sharp stick and refused to drop it when ordered to by police.
What options do the police have at this point?
Perhaps tackle the kid? no, that stick could put an eye out.
Your left with a Tazer, or Pepper Spray.
I think Pepper Spray is the safest option in this situation. Beside that, the kid has to learn, better sooner then later, that you do what cops tell you to do. If this behavior is allowed to continue, it would be a Tazer at 13 years, and perhaps a bullet at 19. You don't brandish a weapon at police and expect hugs and kisses. I think the kid got off easy. He could have spent a few days in Juvenile hall.

the police's job is to talk talk talk to people, not taser them, not pepper spray them, not beat them with clubs. Talking is always an option, unless they were seconds away from being skewered on the stick.
>What options do the police have at this point?
TALKING!

Was probably thinking, WHY WEREN'T THEY USING A TASER? She would probably water board her own kids, after all to her, its not torture. Its discipline!

We weren't there. We don't know what actually took place. I can tell you that the general public has no clue what these kids can be like in our schools today. I am a teacher in a middle school, grades 5-8. There are times when I wish we had an armed police officer in our school. Other schools in our corporation, do.
Apparently this boy has a history of behavioral issues. He even stated on the Today Show that he probably deserved to be sprayed! He was yielding a stick, considered a weapon by school corporations, with a sharp end. He was throwing some kind of temper tantrum. The immediate issue is safety. The staff may have felt that safety in this case took priority over calling parents first.
Again, we weren't there, so we don't know what everyone was thinking, or what other steps were taken.

19. As a retired educator, Id like to say... |

You would be amazed at how many parents don't want to be bothered with their kids "problems." I was a school social worker for decades and some parents would say that's the school's problem, not theirs. Of course the kid is wild at home also but they refuse to deal with any of it.

this state-condoned, child-directed violence permeates her utterly moronic audience at deep, deep levels. The country is headed towards vicious rogue police with cart blanche to leave a legacy of brutality upon all civilians who submit to the yoke.
This pepper-spraying of an EIGHT YEAR OLD is insanity. Anyone, anyone at all who agrees that this is ok needs to be completely shunned and shamed till their knees buckle.
I'm so angry I could scream.

14. Fox News host ’100 percent’ in favor of pepper spraying kids |
|
What does Fox News host Gretchen Carlson think of police potentially using pepper spray against a young child? “In my book, that’s called discipline,” she said during Tuesday’s broadcast of “Fox and Friends.” That was her response to a story about a school that called the police on an 8-year-old — and a position even her co-hosts on the conservative opinion show seemed a bit incredulous over http://www.rawstory.com/rawreplay/2011/04/fox-news-host-100-percent-in-favor-of-pepper-spraying-kids-who-throw-temper-tantrums/

He's in SECOND grade!! You don't hurt the kid. He obviously has issues, but hurting him won't help, it'll only increase his anger. He and his parents need help to learn how to deal.

20. There is definitely more to this story. |
|
This child did not just throw a severe temper tantrum in class. He has a history of violent outbursts and was not in a mainstream classroom. He was completely out of control and unable to be reasoned with. He was threatening to kill the police officers and had a sharp pointed stick he was brandishing at them.
I've gone up against an irate 8 year old and they are not as easily subdued as some may think. His comments on one of the morning shows were chilling. He scares the daylights out of me. I'm afraid I cannot second guess the police in this instance. They managed the situation without any permanent harm to all of the participants.
