MSNBC The Last Word w/ LAWRENCE O'DONNELL - 8 April 2011: The Last Word - excellent piece on Planned Parenthood. O'Donnell reads what Sen. Kyl SHOULD have said about Planned Parenthood instead of the lie that he told on the Senate floor.

O'DONNELL: "As Senate humiliations go, it's hard to do worse than John Kyl did today without doing something that gets you dragged in front of the ethics committee.

Now, I've never visited a Planned Parenthood office, so I know little beyond that pie chart about what Planned Parenthood does. But I have friends who depend on Planned Parenthood. One of them, currently an unemployed victim of the Great Recession, who can't even afford cable TV to watch this show tonight, sent me an email today saying 'Stop these wackos.'

Here email deserves a place in the Congressional Record today beside the lies being told about Planned Parenthood.

She says: 'Do they have any idea how expensive birth control is and how important it is for it to be provided to women at Planned Parenthood clinics? A regular prescription for my pill was $98 a month without insurance. And even with insurance, it was $78 through the pharmacy. Who can afford that every month? Last summer through my employer's insurance which I lost along with the job is the first time I've ever been to a quote real gynecologist, a doctor outside of Planned Parenthood. But as a woman I need an annual exam.

Even beyond birth control, and my unfortunate and devastating abortion, I've needed Planned Parenthood for breast exams. My breasts are cystic. Since I was seventeen, I've had small lumps come and go, and through Planned Parenthood, I've had three ultrasounds and two mammograms. Presently I have another large lump that may be more serious and once again Planned Parenthood is offering to perform an exam and provide me with assitional testing.

At my current income, these services will most likely be entirely free to me, as my birth control now is. In the past I would pay a donation of my choosing that I determined by my income, which would be at most $20 a visit. In addition, the doctors or nurse practitioners at Planned Parenthood are the only medical doctors I get to see every year. I haven't had a general practitioner in 10 years. (I haven't even been able to afford a teeth cleaning from a dentist in five.)

And I can't even fathom what it would be like to be able to have a doctor to visit if I get ill to be able to have doctors, nurses services available to me at Planned Parenthood that I would otherwise be unable to afford is a huge relief and burden off my shoulders. Now I am afraid those services will no longer be available to me. It's terrifying to think that with lack of funds, millions of women wouldn't have access to this kind of care. I can't imagine what I would do without Planned Parenthood.

Talking about what they do is part of your job right now, so I wanted you to know on a personal level what Planned Parenthood does for me so it might influence you when you're on the subject at work. I feel my voice is lost and there's nothing I can do about this situation.

Please yell some sense into these people.'

1. It was a powerful, personal expression of the fulcrum of this budget battle.
Great broadcasting there.

3. It is rare indeed when a professional "breaks" as O'Donnell did
last night at the end of that e-mail. It has it's effect on me as well. One woman saved because of an organization that was proposed to help women in need in when others would not.

How may others have been saved through screenings, referrals, treatments? These are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters and nieces; they are the one's that bring life into this world, and the are left in the cold by ideologues, like Kyle and Bachmann. They evil that these Republicans pass on to those who nurture us, is beyond anything hell can conjure up.

I wish no ill upon anyone,, and I that the good people of Planned Parenthood that have taken it upon themselves to help hundreds of thousands of those that need care, saving lives every day...while the Kyle's and Bachmann's would just as soon watch them die.

Thank you Lawrence.

6. I wonder if he has daughters...
once you have a "hostage" to the future (and then granddaughters, too!) you realize how high the stakes are. Your child could be at risk! It is unconscionable to me to not fight like hell so my daughters and granddaughters will have the same right as I possessed.

5. Only were it possible to "yell" some sense into these people.
They're not interested in sense, truth, or facts. They have an ideological agenda, and no matter what anyone says, it won't make a dent in their little fantasy world. Kyl's lie and subsequent excuse for telling such a bold faced lie should have consequences. Why are these A-holes allowed to get away with this stuff?

12. Unrec for LO giving kyl the benefit of the doubt
Why do liberals keep giving these disingenuous douchebags cover? Kyl's a fucking big boy and should be able to take the heat without LO fellating him on prime time. Fuck this.

13. Passion...
LO has been known to get a little excited. I recall him being called on the carpet a few years ago because he got into Pat Bucannon's face on a show that was being hosted by Joe Scarborough. He nearly made LO apologize to Bucannon. I thought for sure that LO was about to loose his position at MSNBC.

The "excitement" that caused him to loose it with Bucannon comes from the same place that causes him to get choked up...It's from "PASSION."

I know now why I get so upset at times and so choked up at times...passion.

The way he tossed the phone and the camera cut away seems scripted to me. I'm not a fan.

25. Beck never cried over people that were hurting or suffering from poverty or deprivation.
He cried over wanting his country back from the socialist, fascist, Nazi Kenyan that was going to socialize medicine so that people like LO's friend and others in her shoes could get life saving treatment and hospitalization when they needed it. Beck cried tears because he just "loved" his country so much and "feared" for it. Feared that the rich like him would need to pay their fair share and the little people would get social justice in the form of more affordable health care, schools, jobs programs and social safety nets. He should've saved those alligator tears. His multi-millions are safe. But, he never once cried over any empathy for another human being's suffering on his show.

27. Yes, instead of showing tears of compassion for this woman
he should have remained coldly passive and emotionless. That would have been a much better response, you're right.
