Is NATO failing with its attempts in Libya? Former Regan Administration official Paul Craig Roberts thinks the situation with Gaddafi is much different than the other recent protests in the Arab world. "Why is NATO there?" has become to real question, says Roberts, who fears that risky involvement stemming from American influence could lead to catastrophic breaking point.

1. It isn't like I don't read DU.
NATO is there to force Qadaffi to sell oil to the west.

His refusal to do so is the source of all the problems.

Because he wouldn't play ball with the big oil companies, he had to go,

4. the real distinction
Aside from oil implications of intervening in Libya and Gaddhafi's potential downfall, keep in mind the key distinction between Libya and other protests in the region is the civilian death toll. Within three weeks of protests in Libya, at least 6,000 civilians were already killed.
