1. Two square kilometers? That's a huge garbage island.... |
|
...expect the Republicans will propose that it be used as a place for the poor.

10. Most of the debris was swept well offshore before the Dai-ichi plant had it's first explosion. |
|
So, this stuff is probably not very radioactive. It'll be carrying some fallout, but it was not exposed anywhere near as much as the surrounding countryside in Fukushima Prefecture was.

4. And there will be bodies in the flotsam |
|
it will be a horrible thing to have to clean up, assuming the radiation wouldn't kill or sicken any of the crew

9. We need a fleet of garbage collector ships to pick it up and move it all to a safer location. |
|
But hey, that would take an investment in planning and mobilization of our best engineers and shipyard workers. And in these days, in which everything has to be done for profit, it's unlikely to happen - or even be considered.
Humanitarian and environmental issues just aren't profitable enough for corporations. It's less costly (for them) to just let the whole thing play out.
Now if governments actually cared about sustaining life and keeping the environment clean, we could all pool a small portion of our money together - taxes - to help in cleaning this mess up. But I'm just dreaming. Silly me. The rich just don't want to be bothered by such things. They'll just move somewhere else if they have to.
Could you even imagine a republican caring about the environment enough to want to do something about it? Now that's an absurdity.
