1. Quitters.
That's the same as saying that the situation is hopeless and that they are going to disclaim any responsibility and stop any further efforts to improve things.

10. There are those on the right who essentially believe that
They don't say the situation is hopeless, but they say things instead like, "There will always be poor people so why bother trying to help them," or its counterpart, "There are still poor people so programs to help them have failed so why do more?" It's part of God's plan that there are always poor people or we can destroy the Earth because we were given dominion over it, etc.

15. Giving up is an essential part of the RW mindset.
They don't necessarily like how the corporate machine treats them, but are resigned to it. All politicians or parties are equally bad--that's part of the surrender mentality.

22. To add to that-
Religion -any religion- essentially teaches the lower classes to accept their lot in life because it's been ordained. If you buck up and don't make trouble for the ruling classes you'll be rewarded in the hereafter. That's another reason why so many of those cynical bastards are always trying to push religion onto the country- it's the opiate of the masses.

5. Ah yes praying, thinking that you're helping without having to do anything to actually help
Seriously, has prayer ever worked? Has anyone ever in the history of the world asked for a specific item, and had it delivered by the deity being addressed in a consistent, verifiable, and in a matter not similar to a random event?

11. Really? Prayer?
Where has there been any evidence that prayer changes one thing? It might make you feel better about yourself, but really...objective evidence? Even if you are religious, what solid proof is there that sucking up to the invisible cloud being is going to make a difference? Who has it worked for in the past? Think of all the deeply religious nations that have risen and fallen in history. Hell, the Western Roman empire was a Catholic land when it was done in.
There is more evidence that fanatical, conservative religion is an indication of the decline of a great power.

20. the government has spent more than $2.3 mil studying the power of prayer
>>"At least 10 studies of the effects of prayer have been carried out in the last six years, with mixed results. ...

Prayers offered by strangers had no effect on the recovery of people who were undergoing heart surgery, a large and long-awaited study has found.

And patients who knew they were being prayed for had a higher rate of post-operative complications like abnormal heart rhythms, perhaps because of the expectations the prayers created, the researchers suggested. "<<

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/31/health/31pray.html

Hadn't read that article in years but always remembered the bit about the group which did worst was those who KNEW they were being prayed for. Forgot the bit about the gov funding research.

But in my experience and in talking to others: Prayer works on a psychosomatic level at the very least -- the inverse of 'move a muscle = change your mood' Millions who prayed for strength, courage or hope got those things. Million who use prayer as a meditation to find peace and order in their chaotic lives found some peace.

12. When outcomes are positive - it's God's will
When outcomes are horrific, it's God's will. When does turning to god change one god damned thing?

PLEASE GOD - Call your devoted "home". The rest of us here, want to get on with our lives.

religious people who "pray", to give me one single shred of evidence that a
prayer anywhere on the planet has ever been answered. I'm still waiting for
an answer........probably gonna be a looooooooong wait.
