2. Good one! Thanks!
We are living in a war zone. I wonder how many people really get that?

In today's world war has morphed. While you might expect a real war to be about bombs and guns with lots of unavoidable blood, dismemberment and countless deaths that you can see, this war is something of a different nature, yet is is war none-the-less.

The battle is one of cost-effective means. You can wage this kind of war with media and politicians in a way that saves money and leaves more spoils all along the way, (not that traditional occupation and battle is not without immense financial rewards to business) It is a battlefield of the mind. Like the neutron bomb, you can fight this one with fierce intensity and still leave what is profitable standing. In this kind of campaign, you use media, pundits and politicians to overwhelm and overcome those who are either indentured to the system, ignorant of its current structure or functions, or complacent about reacting to its continual salvos and attacks.

Undeclared wars are the hot fashion now, so that should be a clue to the one we are living in. Empires often tend to turn inwards on their own people when possible when exploitation becomes the primary motivation. We are there, but damned if that's going to be spelled-out by anyone working for the preservation and expansion of the Status Quo. Yes, it is a class war for the most part, but the system is working for many causes that have very little to do with We The People, rights, or our empowerment and enrichment. That's a harsh and detrimental environment to be in, but when you are at war, it is acceptable and collateral damage is inevitable. Ah, collateral damage for who?

What if they gave a war and nobody seemed to be clearly aware of it?

Hey poor people, you don't deserve a clinic for your medical care, say why don't you run to Walgreens or the supermarket for your OB/GYN exam!

6. 3% vs. 90%? That's pretty close for Republican maths.
He was only off by a factor of 30. I'm amazed Sen. Kyl didn't claim it was eleventy bazillion percent.

I'm starting a clock to see how long it takes before any Republicans I know repeat the 90% message.

You know, one of those old philosphers, I think it was Spinoza (and modern quantitative experiments have supported this hypothesis), said people have a tendency to believe whatever they hear or read without questioning it. It takes an extra mental effort to question the veracity of a statement. So all it takes is a little laziness for a lie to become an accepted belief. Add to that a community who highly values faith and condemns doubt or skepticism about their beliefs, people who essentially WANT to be deceived, and you have, um, . . . well, you have modern-day America.

* Bill has Andrew Sullivan on too much and he dominates the talk, displacing some people I find more interesting - like Elliot Spitzer, for example.

military budget & medicare - Social Security is completely different....people have been paying into the SS fund every working week for as many as 30 or 40 or even 50 years!

The over-blown military budget and amazing military waste as well as medicare indeed does come from our taxes....

Social Security is NOT in the same category as the aforementioned but republicans are trying their best to privatize SS for the the corporations and give all SS money to Wall Street investment bankers to steal from every worker via bankruptcies, bailouts or legislation changes by corporations million dollar lobbyist!!

10. SS mis-information
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 04:27 PM by 90-percent
SS is running a surplus that won't be of concern for at least 26 more years. (more or less - 2047, 2036 or something is when tweaking will be needed)

It is funded by you and your employer. NOT TAXPAYERS.

The government has been using the SS funds like a bank giving them a loan. It is part of the national debt only because the government has borrowed trillions from it. And Conservatives want to just take it and default on their loan obligation to pay it back. Hence when they say SS is broken, they are really saying; "We already got your money, dude!"

SS ain't the problem. The government burning through the massive amount of money in SS is the problem. The real solution, especially from a conservative point of view is "Keep your government hands off our SS surplus!"

The entire nation and media has embraced this false conservative frame of the issue so much that the common wisdom in America is that SS is broke, when it's really only the moral bankruptcy of the government.

That's my framing, anyway.

Maher on a few shows back didn't get it he put military spending, Medicare and Social Security all in the same bat that must be cut....I love Maher, but often he is just not well informed on certain things.....This being one of them.

ONLY the greedy slimy republicans want to PRIVATIZE Social Security (that millions of workers have paid into the SS fund every working week for decades that's taken out their pay checks each week) republicans have always wanted to destroy & privatize SS (since it's inception) - As Bush stated many times he wanted to do and the democratic said no fucking way and Bush stated publicly many times and in his book, he considered not privatizing SS for the investment bankers & corporations as his biggest failure as president - The collusive incompetent corporations will profit from the workers years of investing into the SS fund if privatized and the banking investment corporations will steal all of just as they did with millions of peoples investments & pensions when Bush signed the bank bailout bill on October 4th 2008!
