First the nooze media say that 5,000 showed up at the tea party rally in Tampa. They came and went, and at best there were 350...tops.

Just like the governor in florida who was called out for revealing the people's florida budget to the tea party at a private event, this group thinks no one else should be allowed on the sidewalk.

The man with the megaphone is John Russell, the democratic nominee in 2004 AND 2006 in congressional dist. 5, fla. He works in healthcare and speaks out on "medicare for all" and a "single payer system". Just look at the negativity this tea party group puts out there.

if that jerk ever served this nation in uniform, or in any other capacity, I would be flabbergasted. He is, th classic punk; a worthless piece of crap that deserves to be little more than a doorstop at the Gates of Hell.

There should have been several arrests for assault by the way. The cowardly redhead in the USA cap took off when the police arrived. Gotta love these "brave" people picking on a woman with a camera.

That blackwater guy is a complete tool and if he really is a ex marine then what a shame to america for him acting like he is. Bravo John i applaud you. Tea baggers are anti american morons who don't and will never have any common knowledge in this world called reality. To me they're completely ignorant and act like rabid animals, and always wrong about facts that they don't have, which is why they always result to name calling and violence, but they live in a little world called imagination land.

Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 08:25 AM by HolyCity2012
The purpose of a protest is to draw attention to an issue. This guy with the bullhorn wasn't doing that. All he managed to do was get his wife beat up. I know when I protest my goal is to bring attention to an issue and encourage people to listen to some ideas that they might not yet have considered. Disturbing this Tea Bagger event just pushed them further away.

We The People should always exercise our rights but it is plain to see, this guy wasn't there to do anything except be a disturbance.

20. He managed to get his wife beat up?
Blame the victim much? Maybe she was operating the video camera while wearing boxing gloves, and was just asking for it, huh?

The fact of the matter is, the guy has spoken at some of the earlier tea-bagger events, and tried to talk some sense into them. Nicely. It didn't work.

And when you're dealing with Marco Rubio and Ralph Reed, be prepared for this kind of response, no matter how you act. They are the leaders of a brownshirt movement, pure and simple.

Listen to what the mindset is that you're dealing with in post #17 above.

"the guy has spoken at some of the earlier tea-bagger events, and tried to talk some sense into them. Nicely. It didn't work."

So you are saying that this man and his wife were aware of who they are dealing with?

I don't need to pull a stunt like this to find out what these baggers are capable of.

Bethany Hamilton never blamed the shark that bit off her arm.

Pro-Tip: The videographer should remain about 30 yards away.

Pro-Tip: Don't pull this kind of stunt with only two people.

27. ...and that's why Florida lost it's ocean.
Fighting ignorance by ignoring it is a cowardly suggestion. You're suggesting that when someone shove you down, you should just stay down? What a shitty statement!

Yes, they were aware of who they are dealing with. The 'videographer' is an Environmental Science PHD and a former professor of mine. "The guy" is a seasoned politician and activist. And "stunts" like this have been instrumental in every rights/political movement that has made any difference in our country. How about "Don't ask for equal rights when you know that white people have dogs and hoses" or "just shut up and pray whether you believe it or not, because good schools do that"?

BTW, 30 ft away? Even if that wasn't a completely asinine suggestion, did you happen to watch the video at all? That little speck in the distance is the Tea Party Rally. These people approached the protesters, not the other way around. They were a solid 100 yards from the actual event.

As for your critique of his approach to protest, it takes a truly blind individual to watch this and accuse the protesters of being violent, abrasive, or out of line. Your comments are equivalent to the guy who is heard claiming that Dr. Tabone (filming), assaulted Lisa Bamberger (the screeching woman) in the hand with her face!

On top of all of this. Russel was standing and protesting through a bullhorn, loudly vocalizing his position but never erupting into violence even when attacked. If the teabaggers had not trekked all the way over to Russel and attacked him, or come to speak and contest without malicious intent, there would have been no violence. There would have been a man and his wife standing on a public sidewalk vocalizing their beliefs.

As for their being only two people, that is no fault of theirs. It's a testament to their perseverance. I should have been there, and was going to be if I hadn't gotten incredibly sick that day. Even so, I regret missing it now and won't let illness be an excuse next time. There should have been more than two hundred people there, but you suggest less than two. There should have been open debate and civil rights present, but you suggest that bully tactics are rightfully the law of the land? What the hell is wrong with you?

No, Bethany Hamilton didn't blame the shark that bit off her arm, but Bethany Hamilton didn't live in the ocean. There is no Bethany Hamilton in this analogy. We are the sharks, and the Tea Party is BP.

bullshit.

Sure, there are many ways he could have tried to get information out, for instance setting up a booth
--but did you notice it seemed he was only allowed on the sidewalk?
Kinda hard --and illegal-- to set a booth up on a sidewalk, don't you think?

Nor is it likely that these mouth-breathers would listen, respond or otherwise engage in professorial quiet, civil discussion.

The truth is we don't know what options were open to him.

Bottom line: your "tact and respect" = Doormat

Head on over to DU's Latin America forum, or any Cuba/Venezuela threads here. Defenders of Cuba's and Venezuela's sovereignty are routinely called communists ...

President Chavez impressed me with his action to provide heating oil for low-income Americans in 2006:

When youre a U.S. Congressman and 25,000 constituent families cant find affordable heating oil this winter, you tend not to care where help comes from. Thats at least how U.S. Representative Chaka Fattah of Philadelphia felt last week when Citgo — the U.S.-based company owned by the government of Venezuelas left-wing President Hugo Chavez — delivered 5 million gallons of heating oil at a 40% discount to low-income Philadelphia residents. Fattah says he doesnt understand the objections of many congressional conservatives who feel U.S. cities should not be helping improve the image of Chavez, one of President Bushs most strident critics. "The U.S. buys 1.5 million barrels of oil from Venezuela each day at full price," says Fattah, "so why would anyone complain about getting some at almost half price?"

Thats a question the Bush Administration — whose feelings for Chavez are certainly mutual — has struggled to answer ever since Venezuela initiated the Citgo program last November. While the heating oil gesture has certainly allowed Chavez to tweak Bushs nose, it is also being recognized inside and outside of Washington as a public relations coup for Chavezs Bolivarian Revolution (named for South Americas 19th-century independence hero, Simon Bolivar).

As a result, its growing well beyond its original scope: Philadelphia, Boston, the Bronx and cities in Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island have received a total of 45 million gallons of the subsidized Citgo fuel, and other cities are slated for another 5 million soon. Thats a small percentage of the heating oil Venezuela exports to the U.S. each year, but Citgo says it has set aside about 10% of its refined petroleum products for the program. Says Larry Birns, director of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs in Washington, D.C., "Unfortunately for the Bush Administration, Chavez is proving to be a more inventive thinker in terms of hemispheric politics."

Yet, he's a "commie." But he did a helluva lot more than what Bush or the Saudis did...

And the sorry-assed media in the Tampa Bay area still continue to talk like the baggers are some kind of mass movement. TV, radio, even the supposedly "liberal" St. Pete Times.

Now, they're upset because they're starting to just catch on that they've been used by the Republican Party, and being played for the suckers that they are.

http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/elections/tea-parties-ask-just-whos-behind-tea-party-in-action/1165048

And then to rub salt into their wounds, the Republican legislature is pretty much trying to outlaw them or any other third party from getting recognition as a party, and being able to put candidates on the ballot.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42697519

But, it's not surprising. Listen to the radio interviews with them on the WMNF tape linked at the Kos article. These idiots couldn't find their ass with both hands, a coon hound and a GPS!

From John Russell... I am heartened by the very positive response to both the events depicted in the video as well as the efforts that we made to provide a new and exciting perspective to those in attendance at the rally... including the speakers. I believe that any way we can puncture the cocoon of MIS-information that is being fed to these people by their "leaders" will in the end prove beneficial to moving the debate on to more level ground. Thanks again to all you DU'ers. John Russell and Chyrisse Tabone Russell
