Canada has this law from 1938 that imposes a $25,000 fine on people who divulge election results from the eastern part of the nation to the west before closing time there. And it even stretches to Twitter and Facebook! Meanwhile, the American networks get to call eastern states for a presidential candidate while the western state voters still vote...

3. Bandwagon Effect -- known fact people will vote for who's winning
This is why it is always best to hold off from saying results early because many people are affected to vote in the direction of a winner..especially Independence.
This has been known for nearly a hundred years and yet the US dont impose such a restriction.

4. Judging from your tone
It suggests that you disagree with this law or think it heavy-handed. If that is the case, why so? Do you not think that Elections Canada has a valid concern with how the voting process may be influenced by reports of what is going on in the rest of the country?

5. what about freedom of speech and the right to know?
and don't most voters make decisions in advance rather than jumping the bandwagon? and I wonder if Canada has vote-by-mail like some US states do.
