"We're going to hang him...with that...so to speak... metaphorically..." and then he proceeds to laugh off his stupid remark.

2. Here's text of longer version of the quote

Mitt Romney: "... You remember during the Ronald Reagan/Jimmy Carter debates? That Ronald Reagan came up with this great thing about the 'misery index,' and that he hung that around Jimmy Carter's neck, and that had a lot to do with Jimmy Carter losing. Well, we're going to have to hang the 'Obama Misery Index' around his neck. And, I'll tell you, the fact that you've got people in this country, really squeezed, with gasoline getting so expensive, with commodities getting so expensive, families are having a hard time making ends meet. So, we're going to have to talk about that, and housing foreclosures and bankruptcies and higher taxation. We're going to hang him — so to speak, metaphorically — with — you have to be careful ..."

4. I don't care for Romney but to try and make that a racial
thing just makes us look silly IMO. I don't think he meant anything buy it at all.

5. I think the remark was silly and stupid...
Do I think Romney wants to hang Pres. Obama? Of course not. But it's called using your brain and Romney certainly didn't here.

By the nervous laughter of Romney, even he knew what he said could be interpreted in a wrong way. Only a fool would think it appropriate to talk about hanging the first black president - even if metaphorically.

What this proves is that Romney is still not ready for primetime.

6. The birther thing and the thing about how Obama got Harvard
I definitely agree they are racist. But how many times has Joe Biden stuck his foot in his mouth and we consider him capable of being president.

7. That's just it...
Gaffes vary. Romney should know better not to discuss hanging the president. He's run for president once already. He should be better prepared.

10. This is the guy Obama has to beat.
I sure wish Obama would take the side of the American people really strongly for a change. Because Romney will come in and criticize and offer more of the very strategies that have brought us down. Unless Obama starts offering tax increases for the rich and a more protective trade policy, Obama will lose. Oh, ending the wars and enforcing the privacy rights of Americans would also be smart policies for Obama.

11. I hold Romney totally responsible for
introducing the image of "hanging" and "neck" into the discussion about President Obama. I think he didn't intend to stumble the way he did at the end, but that he deliberately used the image of a black man at the mercy of an angry lynch mob to convey a subliminal message to his audience. Romney wasn't born yesterday. He knew what he was saying. Clearly he chose the anecdote in advance and rehearsed it. I think he made a Freudian slip at the end that he didn't intend.

12. The republicans have created
an eight-year gap in history. Before Obama took office, nothing happened. Somehow they have erased the fact that the last republican administration took office with a budget surplus, a nation at peace and a prospers economy. We became involved in two wars, one we were lied into. Never was the cost put into the budget. Always a supplemental appropriation. Remember we must support the troops? This “War Time President” gave tax cuts twice to the rich while engaging in two wars. The surplus was long gone and he plunged us into more debt than any president ever before. The economy was on the verge of collapsing. His solution was to bail the banks and the people that that had a major hand in the collapse wound up with huge bonuses.
They said that their goal was to make this president fail. And they have done everything they can to do so. Obama has spent a great deal of money but he had to in an effort to get this country moving again. They are now pushing policies that will crush the old, poor and middle class. They want to hang a misery index on him now?

15. That's been the GOP plan since 2008
And it has been very depressing to see how far Democratic legislators let them get away with.

I thought they would surge in as a tough team with their mandate to go Democratic and push through demand-side economics after the Supply Side GOP Path led to the Bush Crash and our current 2nd Great Depression.

I thought we'd surge in with infrastructure jobs and foreclosure moratoria and Medicare for All after the GOP had pushed our economy off the cliff with their deficit spending and wars built on lies.

I am glad that more Democratic legislators are speaking out nationwide after the great cruelty of Republican Economics becomes clear to more and more Americans. I'm sad that it took letting the GOP impose a Governors' Hit Squad in 2010 to get more elected Democrats to act more boldly.

Still angers me that Democrats didn't seize the expiration of Bush Tax Cuts as their primary issue in 2010. The data was all there. Republican priorities versus Democratic ones were all there.

Still very hard to understand why my Democrats let the continuation of unemployment insurance for only one year be tied to letting the tax cuts expire in two years.

So in 2012 we will have a surge in the misery index of people whose unemployment insurance has run out, while the unnecessary tax cuts for the top two percent are still in place.
