1. So Unfortunately Misled
I feel so sorry for this soldier, and for all of them who have
been thrust into this war. This war of false pretenses. I
found myself angry with what he was saying at first, then I
just began to pity him. I wonder if he would feel the same way
had he not been lied to about this war. I wonder how many of
them feel like this. I have a cousin over in Iraq right now,
and I worry about him every day. I can only hope he knows the
real reason why he is there; not to liberate the Iraqi's, but
just to survive until the democrats can bring him home. When
the can put an end to project Operation Iraqui Liberation or
"OIL" as many of you know.

2. He wasn't talking about the reasons for going to war...
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 12:53 AM by Limelight
It seems he was protesting someone elses indictment of Bush on his stance on torture and desire go ignore the Geneva conventions. More or less he was saying we are, for whatever reason, fighting a dangerous enemy who are willing to do the most hideous things to win (whatever they define that as).

I will say that his reasoning gets to be a little like Col. Kurtz in Apocolypse Now... where he went into a village, imunized a group of children, and then came back to find the enemy had lopped off the arms that those children had recieved the immunization shot in. More or less he reasoned if he had soldiers willing to fight that dirty and commit those type of atrocities they would win the war easily.

The problem with that argument is we aspire to be better than our enemies. We don't go down to their level because we fight for a better world than our enemy is trying to create. Besides that Col. Kurtz was obviously a friggin' nutcase.

Not that he is though. This guy doesn't sound stupid or brainwashed. Matter of fact he sounds very passionate and resolute on his stance and has devoted some time in evaluating the situation before coming to it. I disagree with him, but he doesn't seem some poor unfortunate sheep lead astray. You are of course correct about why we went to war, but unless I missed it that wasn't what he was talking about.
