Views on DU: 605 | Barack Obama is rounding up support for his decision to withdraw more than 30 thousand troops from Afghanistan, by the end of next year. France says it could also pull all of its forces out by the same period. But nearly 70 thousand American troops will remain, amid warnings from U.S. commanders that progress against the Taliban is "fragile and reversible". There's also concern that less troops will NOT mean less collateral damage, as Gayane Chichakyan reports

1. Lets get this straight - |
|
THERE IS NO AL QAEDA IN AFGHANISTAN and there has been no Al Qaeda for years - they moved to Pakistan, Yemin, the bad lands, etc, etc years ago.
The US is fighting the Taliban - the local religious ruling war lords, and has been doing so for years.
The US is fighting exactly the same war the Russians fought, for the same reason, and is losing for the same reason, instead of Stinger Missiles its shaped charges and much, much better guerrilla tactics.
It emerged almost five years ago that Afghanistan has around 3 trillion in raw minerals (rare earth minerals especially which China has a virtual monopoly on), the market value of this is in teh double digit trillions, while the 3rd degree value of products derived from this (ipads, iphones) is in the tens of trillions.
Like Libya, Iraq, Syria, etc - OBama is much more effective at getting results without bombs, either through CIA led revolutions or reinforcing complaint dictatorships. The initial surge was in order to placate military corporate interests while the current draw down is for re-election.
He couldn't have planned it any better. No one, and I mean no one can say Obama isnt a war guy (Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan etc) while no one can say he hasn't ended the wars (ironic isn't it).
Yaaay.
