1. He didn't just say "coons". That probably qualifies him as a liberal in Nebraska!

4. Doing what?
You do realize that usually a welfare to work person gets paid less than someone who would have normally held the job. They are usually paid minimum wage, which is deducted from the welfare check. It doesn't help them break the cycle of poverty, it keeps them there.

Yes, there are some welfare cheats, but the number is low. I would estimate it as about the same number as kids who cheat on tests. It is not fun being on welfare. They not only invade your personal life, but if you get a job, they inform your employer that you are on welfare. Fun, huh.

There are also a lot of people who are on welfare, who are taking care of sick family members. Single parents who decided that medical care for their child was more important than working a minimum wage job or a job that provides no health care. Until there is free universal health care, people will stay on welfare, if they need to.

20. Universal health care IS the answer to many of the
problems that plague America. The current for-huge-profit system, benefits the insurance companies only. It keeps Americans trapped in various scenarios.

9. If there was work for them, they would not need welfare.
The only reason a person needs welfare is that there are no jobs. I think it was under Clinton that welfare is now only for mothers and young children. Also, there is SSI for older citizens who are unable to work, but do not qualify for enough Social Security money to sustain themselves.

My question is what is wrong with Congress working for their great salaries, excellent benefits, and great pensions. Not to mention they actually vote their own raise.

13. With the exceptions of the mentally ill, and mothers with
small children who can't earn enough to cover the cost of daycare, most people on welfare would probably love to be working on that road-building job for a decent wage -- at least minimum wage.

24. One reason
The cost of child care to the state. Welfare was created to prevent children from living in orphanages. And the meaning of welfare today is relative. Most consider food stamps to be a form of welfare, yet the majority who receive food stamps are the working poor. Wages are so low, working people now qualify for welfare benefits.

3. I like raccoons.
And they shouldn't be hungry.

Too bad there aren't enough good jobs for raccoons, and humans too.

10. Jerk
This ass clown is always running for something here and looks like he's trying appeal to the lowest element of our state. What Nebraska doesn't say is how they keep the unemployment at 4.1,they only count the ones that receive unemployment payments and not the ones that used up their payments.Nebraska is what they call a Tier 1 state, which means that you can only receive unemployment for 1 year if you qualify. They don't count the ones that have used up their unemployment payments. My wife has been looking for a job here for almost 3 years,I can only work part time due to health problems so I get food stamps.I really resent what this fuck stick is saying,he's considered a joke in Nebraska and a perennial looser. This is someone who thinks his shit don't stink and looks down on people less fortunate than him. God I'm PISSED.

17. Welcome to DU!
The situation that you are in really does make one wonder why this idiot seems to think that he's above everyone. Every time that you think the R's can't be any more insensitive, inane and clueless, damned if they don't manage to prove you wrong.

I hope that your situation turns around soon. This country really knows how to turn its' back on the people who need help.

22. The unemployment rate is NOT dependent on recieving benefits
The states use the same criteria as the national numbers (because BLS puts out both) an you are unemployed if you are not working but currently looking for work. UI benefits don't come into play.

11. Every member of Congress should work & live on minimum wage for 1 month
That would be a good August vacation; living the easy life...
No health insurance. Rent a place they can afford on their new income. They wouldn't last a week.

15. Was this before he announced the Corn Huskers were gonna be the Raccoons now?
Since Nebraska is a net debtor, this is it needs the welfare of the federal gov in order to function as a state.
