1. Don't tell that reporter what Rick Santorum does in that foam.

TV Reporter Gives Hurricane Irene Update While Covered in Toxic Waste

TV Reporter Gives Hurricane Irene Update While Covered in Toxic WasteBelow is a video of WTTG's Tucker Barnes casually giving a live report on Hurricane Irene today from Ocean City, Maryland while drenched in what he described as "organic matter" that "doesn't taste great." I wonder why it didn't taste great?

Oh, right: probably because the mystery "sea foam" was mostly likely made up of raw sewage that had poured into the water during the storm and then mixed with cyanobacteria, causing it to foam up.

2. It's fish (and human) poop. And I'm not joking.

Anyone who's run a minireef aquarium knows exactly what that reporter is covered in: It's fractionated protein/biowaste. You can replicate this process artificially with a device known as a protein skimmer, which spins the aquarium water at high velocity to produce just this type of waste-laden foam. In Nature, the process is hardly visible most of the time. In this case, the reporter--who keeps commenting on how bad it smells (ya think?)--is basically floundering around in a foam of human sewage, fish waste, and all forms of marine animal decomposition and rot. Lovely. I think he should scoop up several handfuls and eat it for the camera. I want to be entertained.

3. I was watching that live (via internet) and they were all saying
"nobody has ever seen anything like this before". It was first "foam", then possibly plankton mixed with sand, and now I've heard your explanation which is probably the correct one. I hope the reporter doesn't get sick from it! Ewwww!

5. Gee, I have a sister who has an apartment in Ocean City. I hope her place is ok. She was going
to go but when they announced evacuation they didn't go. What a week the east coast is having.

6. There was foam in the rivers where I grew from the run off dish washers and washing machines.
I think they treat the water more now... maybe.

7. This is hilarious
Thanks for the explanation of what it is. I love how news stations love to send their reporters into the most unpleasant/dangerous situations to get novel video. I surely hope that the reporter is OK, but I can't stop laughing while watching the clip.

Its like a dare that teenage boys would give each other. "Bet'cha you won't go stand in the foam!", "Ya? Bet'cha I will".
