2. If you can get into one of them and either get a financial

aid package that makes it close to a state university, then go for it. If you are talking about anything more than $3K more ($12K total), then go the state route. If the University of Chicago aid package is anything like Harvard, then we will probably be within $3K of the state school option given our current income.

My daughter is interested in Video Editing. She is also very good in math and science and loves science. She is only a 10th grader, but I told her to take a look at University of Chicago and at least apply to it. Our state option, University of Iowa, is alright, but it will not command the national reputation of University of Chicago in this particular field. I am still concerned and sometimes sound like the dad in Dead Poet's Society who did not want his son to pursue acting but instead concentrate on medicine. I have proposed to her to split the difference and get a Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree with a minor in Film Studies from the University of Iowa. I would see her getting her foot in the door with the technical degree but eventually defining her job as a video/film editor. She has a wonderful eye and is a good artist. If she goes to University of Chicago, then she is pushing all of her chips into the pot - she will either succeed in that field or she will not. Of course if she gets a CS degree and hates programming, then what would she have accomplished?

The whole video editing thing goes back to my belief that you do not pursue a career in something everybody wants to do. It seems everyone with a video camera wants to become a video editor (those that don't want to be video game designers). All these eager young people can do nothing but hold the salaries down for that industry.
