1. I've always found Buckley to be nauseating
and a most excellent chickenhawk specimen.

2. Even considering Buckley's pretentious nattering, this shows
how far the level of discourse has fallen in this country. Chomsky and Buckley clearly disagree strongly, but there's no bluster, yelling, talking over, etc. There was an audience for this kind of measured discussion, and I think there is today as well, but the media has hopelessly dumbed down the discourse, and relies on emotive, rather than cranial, response from the audience.

7. Well, let us not forget the Buckley-Vidal throwdown
Poor Howard K. Smith had to practically hold their jackets.

4. Is it just me, or does Buckley interrupt Chomsky at every opportunity?
Chomsky is never allowed to finish a sentence.

9. God -he takes smarmy, smug pretentious condescension
to a whole new level...

Ugh...

And yet, as some poster said upthread, this highlights how far political discourse has fallen in this country....

I guess on CSPAN you can find debates like this even now, so it isn't that they don't exist, its just not on the main news channels...
