Makes a joke about the scream in French. He was a great emissary for our country. Short segment, full speech here. Looks like there will be the full one up at YouTube soon.

6. Thanks Mad - that was great! His french was actually really good & he spoke a lot of it.
I speak some and I would never attempt to speak so much in front of a mother-tongue audience, he did really well. Who knew?

Speaking to your audience in their native language is a profound sign of respect. I have seen only a few world leaders attempt it, now Chairman Dean.

The audience seemed to really respond to him too.

Thank you very much for this clip. It seems you have mastered how to include these clips into posts, comment maniable!

BTW, I LOVE Montreal, great place.

10. That man was a beacon to me in the dark days after 9/11
when the entire country was worshipping Bush & Guiliani, and revving up for war. He was the ONLY one who seemed to get the big picture.

After hearing him speak, I thought he might not appeal as a Presidential candidates to the all-important moderates/independents, but damn, he had the fire we true believers needed at the time, and he had the fire we needed in the recent election.

15. I just heard his words leading up to the scream. Now that was a speech.
A barn burner. I doubt if it happened again that the left would allow the MSM and the GOP to steal the narrative by making lite of a loud scream capitalizing a great speech. I think the feed from the microphones was much louder than the feed the audience heard. Wasn't that loud at all in the version I heard on the CBC. Was in context.

26. DNC has partial transcript up along with video...
http://www.dnc.org/a/2006/11/watch_it_govern_8.php

The Democratic Party had a great day a few weeks ago. But it was the start of our rebuilding, not the end.

Still, I believe there are two main lessons from our success. Lessons for progressive parties everywhere.

Simply put, they have to do with the place of power and how it's practiced.

By the place of power, I mean where it resides.

And that is with the people.

It does not work its way from the top down.

It grows from the grassroots up.

It grows not just in the areas that have traditionally supported you. Whether it is the Liberal Party or the Democratic Party, we should never cede a single region or province, never cede a single state or city. Nor should we ever cede a single voter. Not a single one. It is a mark of respect for the voters that we ask each one for their vote regardless of the likelihood of getting it. This is what we call the 50-state strategy.

We shouldn't just court big donors; we must include small contributors.

We have had to transform ourselves into a Party that could communicate with its supporters and with all of our citizens... in the traditional ways... but also in new ways. By using the power and potential of technology as part of an aggressive outreach to meet and include voters and to get our message out.

But at the end of the day -- whether we're talking 50-states or a 13 provinces and territories -- it's pretty simple.

It's just this: Show up everywhere. And work hard everywhere.

Knock on doors everywhere. Make the calls everywhere. Shake hands everywhere. Do the hard work everywhere.

And keep doing it... because that's what running a permanent campaign takes.

I have been proud at how he never looked back and never backed off from his original goals of changing the party and the country.

28. What the Canadian bloggers are saying....interesting.
I just picked those who indicate they were skeptical of Dean's coming there to speak. It is obvious they understood the message he was trying to get across.

http://calgarygrit.blogspot.com/2006/11/live-from-montreal.html
Live from Montreal

A quick break from the organized spontaneity to recap last night's events.

First of all, let me say that Howard Dean rocked. He got a massive ovation
when he talked about how the party should "never cede a single province, a
single riding, a single vote", spoke a little French ("Fox news is going to
love this" he quipped), and talked about giving power to the grass roots.

Even delegates I know who didn't like the idea of having Howard Dean as the
guest speaker were impressed.

And more:

http://mileslunn.blogspot.com/2006/11/convention-speeches-so-far.html
Howard Dean

Whatever doubts I had about him speaking, I felt he did a good job. Being a
foreigner he had to be careful not too sound too partisan and he did that
well. Instead he focused on how the Democrats were successful and similiar
strategies the Liberals could use to be successful. I thought his goal of
never writing off any voter and reaching out to everyone in every region,
even areas you don't expect to win, was something the Liberals should
follow.
In the last few elections I feel the party has focused too much on
its areas it is strong in and often looks down too much on groups that
aren't likely to vote Liberal. Instead we need to realize we don't have an
automatic right to govern, we need to earn it from Canadians by convincing
them we are the best party with the best ideas. Even those who disagree with
our vision, we should still respect them while at the same time maintain our
principles. I also like his reference to staying true to your principles. As
Liberals, most seem to agree that moving to the right to be a Conservative
lite party is the wrong way to go, but too many think moving to the left to
be an NDP lite party is the way to go. We are successful when we stay true
to who we are. By trying to copy other parties, we are saying that our
policies were wrong and they were right.

And he must have not done so badly on the French.

http://uoyl.blogspot.com/2006/11/day-1-part-2-day-2-part-1_30.html

Next, Frank McKenna introduced the guest of the evening, Howard Dean. While
there were no rebel yells, he did speak excellent French! His speech treated
on the importance of the Canada/US relationship, and on the work that
remains to be done by Progressives everywhere. He focused on the importance
of the place of power, which is with the people. He then treated on the
practice of power: saying that we must never cede a vote ever in the
country, that we must focus on small doners and that we need to be sure to
take advantage of the power of technology. He concluded by speaking of the
shared values that exist between Democrats and Liberals, and by reminding us
that divisive politics is not sustainable, while hope and promise will
always bring people together.

And this person was highly skeptical:

http://bobthered.blogspot.com/2006/11/convention-thoughts-from-my-bed-no-1.html

As someone who was disappointed in the selection of Howard Dean as keynote
speaker, I must admit to enjoying his speech. I felt he delivered exactly
what the convention needed in terms of inspiration, advice and support.

To me, the key points that resonated were to never stop campaigning, to
never cede one vote and to never surrender our values to gain votes.

Honestly, what Dean engineered in the U.S. is equal parts amazing and
understandable. It’s amazing coming in the climate south of the border that
is decidedly conservative and understandable because of the displeasure with
Bush.

It was a quid pro quo. He agreed that if they made him chairman that he would not run 2008. What harm could he do there? Surely he couldn't become wildly popular and successful. His enemies are morons. This party is moving back into the hands fo the people and we can all thank him.

35. I love Howard Dean.
Aside from John Conyers, Jr., he is my favorite Democrat by far. Dean and Conyers are so far ahead of anybody else. Am I the only one who really liked the Dean Scream? I think it showed that he was dedicated, enthusiastic, and not so full of himself as to eschew such genuine emotion. I think the jokes he makes about the scream are pretty funny for a politician, too. I would love a close, progressive alliance between the US and Canada. Start to fix some of the problems facing this continent and strengthen our two nations through mutually benficial dealings. I just hope that if Dean gets universal healthcare that it doesn't follow the Canadian model. Granted, it's not as bad as the British model, but I should hope the we are smart enough to see how much better the Scandinavian models are.

36. Wow! And the man speaks French also!
I really wish he'd run in 08. Why is it that the die-hard Gore supporters won't believe him when he says he's not running, and everyone believes Dean? Could it be that we truly understand that Dean is a man of his word?

And let's not forget that the current revitalization of the Democratic Party is very much his doing. It's the ones who got involved in Dean's campaign who've stayed active, in some cases run for office and even won. And it's Dean's 50 state strategy that got us the House and the Senate this year.

42. And he's in Europe this week...
with the purpose of repairing relations with other countries.

French presidential hopeful asks Howard Dean to set up a visit to the US

Pictures at the link, but these statements as well. I bolded the part that really struck me so hard.

"Howard Dean, chairman of the national committee of the U.S. Democratic Party, is attending the two-day conference together with the leaders of leftist governments of several countries and party leaders from across Europe.

"We are not anti-American, we want the real America, your America," former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the European Socialist Party, said in remarks directed at Dean.

Socialists, or centre-left governments, currently hold or share power in just over half of Europe."

There are many fences to mend with the world since Bush has done so much harm.
