3. Very impressive as well as persuasive.
He won over the interviewer & that says a lot. All Obama supporters would be wise to send this video to everyone they know.

6. This guy clearly saw a young black man and thought he wouldn't be "articulate"
What a dick. What a racist, disgusting dick.

9. yup--it was great to see the answers he articulated
on the spur of the moment. Wasn't about to be intimidated. His father is a pediatrician--explains why he knows more than the average person about health care problems.

12. When he said his Father was a pediatrician,
it was all over.
That was the turning point with the interviewer. He began to tone down. In these here parts we call it crawfishing.

18. he used the same interview style with a white guy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htD8v2t81h4

it would have been racist to dumb it down for the black guy.

20. Yeah, I think he was just trying to test out the idea that voters are ill-informed
I have noticed that reporters have been doing this to Obama supporters more than Clinton supporters. It's not so much a racial thing as a stereotype about Obama supporters in general.

Or is it just that for you, it's all about dissing Senator Clinton?

8. Bill Maher needs Derrick on his panel.
Identified by a poster on YouTube; I hope it is correct.

From the Soulfege website:
http://www.soulfege.com/bios/dnabio.php

The product of many different cultures, Derrick N. Ashong considers himself a citizen of the world. He was born in Ghana, West Africa but raised in several diverse locations around the world including Accra, Ghana, Brooklyn, New York, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Doha, Qatar. He returned to the U.S. for his last two years of high school in Voorhees, NJ before coming to Cambridge, MA to attend Harvard University.

A natural performer and songwriter, he was involved in theater throughout primary and elementary school while also learning to communicate his thoughts through poetry. He studied clarinet and eventually piano while constantly making up little tunes with his sister for fun. It wasn’t until 10th grade that he started to record both his musical ideas and poetic efforts to create what would be his first ventures into songwriting.

Known in college as both a talented musician and actor, Derrick performed all over campus. He joined the Kuumba Singers and its a cappella subset, Brothers, where he met his future band-mates, Sheldon, James, and Jon. After taking time off from Harvard to perform in Stephen Spielberg’s Amistad, Derrick returned to Harvard to produce, Songs We Can’t Sing; an original and award-winning musical submitted as his senior thesis. It was out of this musical that Black Rose (later to become Soulfège) and the concept for ASAFO Productions was born.

Derrick and co-founder David Brunton decided that it was time for a new direction in the music industry, with ASAFO Productions at its forefront. Derrick continues to build ASAFO Productions while pursuing his PhD in African-American Studies and Ethnomusicology at Harvard University.

10. THAT WAS AWESOME!
I am ashamed to say, that when the interview first started I expected some ignorant black kid to start spouting ignorant stuff.

This guy totally rocked. He was intelligent, articulate, and quick on his feet.

He totally reversed the attitude of the reporter. THAT is not easy to do. Normally these guys go out looking for footage to back up the story line they already have formulated in their head. This guy totally turned the reporter upside down.

Now I need to go work on my own prejudices.

actually the interviewer appears ahead of the both of us, expecting Derek to be able to answer his tough questions.

edit: actually my low expectations were more due to his age than his race. Also wrong.

11. Outstanding.
The interviewer started out aggressive and snarky, looking to make sport of him, but this man turned the whole discussion around. Great points about Obama's health plan, and about his ability to make it happen. I'd like to see this one not just K&Red here, but spread around the internet.

31. I didn't like his tone.
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 09:47 AM by Gonnabuymeagun
That's what bothered me. It was just dripping with patronization waiting for the kid to slip up so he could leap on it. It didn't even occur to me that one guy was black and the other was white - although it seems that it *might* have occured to the interviewer.
I don't know how he selected his target, maybe he just picked the one that "looked" more naive. What constitutes that I couldn't say for sure.
but the tone sealed it for me. Condescension, patronization, typical.

edited for clarity
