Pittsburgh police yesterday stopped the workers' pickup truck, with its five occupants, inbound on the Parkway West outside the south portal of the Fort Pitt Tunnels after an officer saw a chain dragging from the hitch that was hauling a 1,000-pound trailer with a large spool of conduit.
A second truck, carrying three more members of the work crew, pulled over moments later.
Six of the men told police they were in the United States illegally, and they were detained by federal immigration officials.
Police said the truck that was pulled over had the trailer's lights disconnected, the truck had an illegal license plate, the hitch was precariously secured to the truck's tow bar and the driver of the pickup did not have a valid license. The truck and trailer were impounded and citations were to be filed.
