Testing the DU waters: Would you support a Gore-Obama ticket?
I suppose there's not much more than a glimmer of a glimmer of a chance--if even that much--that Al Gore will run. But, if he were to make that decision, I think he and Obama would make a great team. I also think a Richardson-Obama ticket would be great.

What do you guys think?

The race is Clinton-Obama, clearly.
The knocks are one has too much experience, and one has too little.
If we were a Parlimentary system, they'd already be in charge on the nation, imo.

34. That's been a criticism, if you can call it that, since he announced.
His popularity and charisma would make him a great candidate for VP and would circumvent the 'not enough experience' critique. It's not because he's black but because he has a bit of a baby face and only a short time in the Senate. 8 years as VP and he could easily win the presidency.

53. I could see him as VP to Al Gore
I'm not at all a big fan of Hillary, not because she is unqualified, or because isn't smart enough. I don't support political dynasties...period. She is also way too political for my tastes. If she is the candidate I'd probably vote for her.

Putting Obama in the VP slot with Gore would vet him and give him experience and a shot at the Presidency 8 years later.

128. I think a recent historical trend is for parties to put forward
minority (women, blacks) candidates to be nominated so that they can take months and months of flack before another traditional white male candidate can be brought to the forefront to win the election. I'm not saying this is intentional, like "We'll put Obama up for sacrifice before bringing in Edwards," but I think forerunners becoming sacrificial lambs is what happens during the process--and it's just more noticeable with minority politicians because they're are just so few of them.

Two examples I can think of:

1972 - Shirley Chisholm
2000 - Elizabeth Dole

It's as I've said before. We'll know we've achieved true democracy in America when a bi-sexual paraplegic woman of Asian-African heritage is elected president.

employed instead of just "people"? Not a shot at you, I've probably done it as well and I see many instances of it. I wonder why. Maybe "black people" sounds harsh whilst "black folks" sounds friendlier?

Why would he want to muddy the waters with a VP choice who believes tax payers should subsidize private insurance companies?

Unless his primary concern is image over substance. But that doesn't seem like where Gore is at.

So my bet would be Clark.

27. I missed it.
I'll have to watch again when it repeats later tonight.

I don't think he's ever been for (and pardon the pun) straight-up gay marriage but has been for civil unions for a long time and for removing don't ask don't tell for a long time.

Personally I am for allowing gay civil union and/or gay civil marriage but don't think the gov't has any power to tell religions that they must marry gay couples within their church or on the flip side that the gov't has the power to tell churches that they can't marry gay couples either.

I will have to wait and see what Edwards said exactly before I can comment further.

Overall, though, I see the gay marriage issue as a Karl Rove manufactured to order wedge issue. It is my understanding that only Edwards got asked this question, not Hillary or Obama. I would like to have heard the same questions answered by all 3 candidates myself.

64. Me, too. Here's what Edwards said...
EDWARDS: Well, first of all, I think what the governor did and what New Hampshire's done is a great example for the rest of the country. Not only civil unions, but all the partnership benefits, including, Senator Clinton talked about getting rid of this "don't ask/don't tell" policy.

I don't think the federal government has a role in telling either states or religious institutions, churches, what marriages they can bless and can't bless. I think the state of New Hampshire ought to be able to make that decision for itself, like every other state in the country. I think every church ought to be able to make that decision for itself.

And I think it's very important that we stand up against intolerance and against discrimination.

But I want to add one thing on something that Governor Richardson sad, because it's been a tone of everything that's been discussed here today. The place that I differ with Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, and I guess, to some extent, Senator Obama, and I agree with Governor Richardson -- it is the job of the president of the United States not to legislate but to lead.

Complete transcript

Unless I'm misunderstanding Edwards' position, I disagree with him. I think the federal government is obligated to enforce the constitutional separation of church and state. And, if states want to prohibit same sex unions, for other reasons, those restrictions would need to be constitutionally sound, as well.

147. I think you are misunderstanding then...
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 07:15 PM by ddeclue
I don't see Edwards saying he's against gay marriage in this quote so I'm puzzled by the outrage here. He just said that he's FOR civil union and for getting rid of don't ask/don't tell.

I don't see how the Federal gov't can "enforce" the separation of church and state by forcing religious organizations to marry gays? That sounds like the opposite of a "separation" to me to force an established religion to marry people in violation of their established doctrine.

The notion that the Federal gov't won't or can't tell the states what to do might be a violation of the spirit of the 14th amendment which says states can't abridge rights of a citizen that are granted at a Federal level but then the 14th amendment doesn't extend to discrimination based on sexual orientation and I don't know how you get an equivalent amendment past 38 state legislatures given that there are still plenty of backwards states in this country where they will oppose such a Federal constitutional amendment.

Therefore, I think the best that can be done legislatively speaking at the Federal level is to let states do their own thing (as Edwards is describing) with the more progressive states liberalizing gay marriage rights while the backwards states will restrict it (similar to abortion).

The consequence will be gay marriages will take place in certain states that will then eventually be forced to be recognized by the other "non-gay" marriage states when married gay couples relocate to those "non-gay" marriage states under the "Full Faith and Credit" clause of the Constitution (Article IV Sections 1 and 2).

There is already a good precedent for this.

This situation has a strong Constutional precedent in Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967) a case that made it to the U.S. Supreme Court in which a mixed race black white couple went to the District of Columbia where such marriages where legal to Virginia where anti-miscegenation statutes prohibited black/white intermarriage.

The Supreme Court ruled this law unconstitutional but they DID cite the 14th Amendment rather than the full faith and credit clause as their primary movitivation - they did also say that marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man.

The main thing that will happen by letting the states take the lead on this issue however is that by legitimizing gay marriage in the progressive states, the people of the backwards states will eventually come to realize that it really isn't the "end of Western Civilization" after all that they were told would occur by the R/W religious zealots and will eventually come to accept it just as they have come to (more or less) accept inter-racial and inter-faith marriages in the past.

NOBODY is saying that any religious institution should/will have to marry same-sex couples.

Please, when you see that myth repeated (that churches will be "forced" to marry us), would you correct it? It's wrong, it's all over the place (I can't count how many times I've seen it on DU alone), and it's damaging. Thanks.

76. Gore doesn't want to run, Obama doesn't want to be VP
Several months ago I thought Gore-Obama or Clark-Obama would make really good tickets. But Clark's not running, and I can't believe anything Gore says about running - plus, his protestations about not trying to be coy aside, he's being really coy and it's getting irritating.

And most importantly Obama does not want to be VP. He wants the whole sack of walnuts.

I had not considered a Richardson-Obama team-up but it's a very good idea. Richardson has the experience to balance Obama's lack, and I think Obama's personality would mesh better with Richardson than with Clark or Gore. But though I like the governor and what he has to say, I'm not sure he's going to make it to the primaries, much less win them.

142. Irritating? How about smart. No need this early. "Obama doesn't want to be VP. He wants the whole
sack of walnuts"? Are you saying he feels he is too good for VP? Do you know this as fact? I'm sorry, but he is just too green for me. Has nothing to do with race, before you jump on that, it has to do with depth. He does not have it, IMO. If he categorically stated he did not want VP and would only 'settle' for Prez, then that is just one more reason for me to say he is definitely not ready,

124. If Gore runs and gets the nomination. He would be in a position to have the V-P candidate
known as "what's his name." Al Gore would win or lose on his own, there is no one that really gives or takes votes as a VP candidate. He would be able to select a totally unheard of person and have them do nothing in the campaign. It's an ideal situation for a presidential nominee, one less person to owe something to.
