USA Today: Violent crime up again, more murders, robberies
USA Today: Violent crime up again, more murders, robberies

By James Vicini Jun 4, 2007, 13:50 GMT

WASHINGTON - More murders and robberies in 2006 sent U.S. violent crimes higher for the second straight year, the FBI said on Monday, with the increase blamed on gangs, youth violence, gun crimes and fewer police on beats.
The FBI reported that the number of violent crimes nationwide went up by 1.3 percent last year, following a 2.3 percent increase in 2005. That had been the first rise in four years and the biggest percentage gain in 15 years.
-------------snip----------------------
A department study released last month of 18 metropolitan areas cited more violence by local gangs or street crews, a greater prevalence of guns in the hands of criminals and younger, more violent offenders as key reasons for the rising crime rates.
Criminologists agreed with those reasons and also said there are fewer police on the beat. They cited the Bush administration's shift in emphasis to prevent terrorism since the September 11 attacks and funding cuts for programs to put more police officers on the street.

The more heavily gun regulated Northeast was the only part of the nation where murder wasn't up. The more liberarian Western states went up the most. I guess concealed carry is now proved to not work.

1. Fear, Fear, Fear...everyone be afraid to leave your homes.....
The crime is going up because Federal Funding for police officers was drastically cut by the the monkey in chief..

..you have fewer officers patrolling larger areas...you have more officers killed in the line of duty...

There are many law enforcement officers in Iraq serving with their Reservest Units...

Most programs trying to keep offenders from reoffending have been cut by the Republicans....

2. Not surprising. If people can't "put food on their families" by working and making
a decent living, they turn to crime.

4. The only thing I see demonstrated is that crime goes up when times are hard.
No shit. And water is wet, too.
Concealed carry works for me, thank you very much.
By your specious reasoning, it has been 100% effective.

6. Agree that it the roots are economic
not related to gun laws (given, though, I am not personally invested in concealed carry laws.)

5. If our (American's) violence is allowed by pursuing immoral wars, rendering, etc - it makes
violent crime acceptable on some level. After all, aren't "we" murdering and plundering in Iraq?

7. Financially hard times often are accompanied by higher "property" crimes
People WILL do whatever it takes to "provide" for themselves and their families.

"The upper-crusties" do it with computers, phones & paperwork"...the others must resort to more "in your face" techniques..

The difference is that the property crimes will probably result in more jail time when the perpetrators are caught..

Most people are murdered by people they know, so my guess is that the higher the tension and frustration in life, the higher that rate would be.

8. I would venture a guess
In saying that all of these gangs were fine upstanding citizens and that their guns were all legally owned.:sarcasm:
