Join Physicians for National Health Care in using "Sicko" as an organizing tool
June 6, 2007

Dear PNHP Members and Friends,

Big news!

PNHP is sponsoring the premiere of Michael Moore's film "Sicko" on June 12 in Sacramento with the California Nurses Association. A press release with the details follows below.

We are also working on events with Moore in several other cities, and are launching a national campaign to promote single payer as the "cure" for our "Sicko" health system. We need you to join us in taking advantage of this tremendous opportunity. Please sign up to help today and we'll send you more frequent updates as the campaign unfolds.

In the policy realm, PNHP Past President Dr. John Geyman has published an article in the Annals of Family Medicine that skillfully debunks the hype surrounding "disease management," the latest ploy in the corporate dominance of health care. Dr. Geyman's article is an invaluable response in aid of single payer national health insurance. Our press release is below - please circulate to your colleagues.

Thank you for your continued support and efforts. Our Annual Meeting will be November 3 in D.C. Plan to come!

Yours truly,

Quentin Young, MD Ida Hellander, MD
Volunteer National Coordinator Executive Director

Michael Moore's "Sicko" to Premiere in Sacramento on June 12 with California Nurses Association and Physicians for a National Health Program

Moore will testify at legislative briefing and rally with single payer activists
Filmmaker Michael Moore’s new documentary “Sicko” will premiere on Tuesday, June 12 in Sacramento with Physicians for a National Health Program, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, and other supporters of single payer national health insurance. “Sicko” opens nationwide in theaters on June 29.

California is a key state for health care reform. One-in-four state residents is uninsured, costs are skyrocketing, and outrage has erupted over the recent $950 million dividend paid by the state’s Blue Cross plan to their new owner, the Indianapolis insurance giant Wellpoint, on top of the $600 million awarded to top executives involved in the 2004 merger.

Debate at the state level mirrors that of the national scene, which boils down to a choice between just two paths for health reform. One path (supported by Schwarzenegger, Massachusett’s Mitt Romney, and Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and John Edwards) is to continue to rely on the wasteful private insurance industry and tinker with tax policy, public subsidies, and other changes favoring insurers. Such reform is administratively complex, would fail to cover all the 46 million uninsured, and adds costs to a health system already the most expensive in the world. States that have tried this path (Hawaii in 1974, Oregon in 1989, Massachusetts in 1988, and Maine in 2003) have more uninsured than before the plans passed.

The other path for reform is single payer, as proposed by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, chair of the California Senate’s Health Committee. Kueh’s bill (SB 840) would replace private insurers with a single comprehensive plan to cover all Californians. The savings on administrative overhead would allow the state to cover everyone and save an additional $7 billion per year, according to the prestigious Lewin consulting firm. On the national level, single payer would save over $350 billion on paperwork costs, enough to cover all the nation’s uninsured. National legislation based on the proposal, HR 676, the Conyers/Kucinich bill, has over 70 co-sponsors.

Single payer gained the support of both houses of the California legislature last year, and is favored by a majority of “likely voters” and 70 percent of “likely Democratic primary voters” in the polls. “Our campaign with physicians and nurses across the country in conjunction with the release of “Sicko” will boost the visibility of the single payer option for reform,” said Dr. Quentin Young. “It’s the only cure for our Sicko health system.”

Michael Moore will testify at a legislative briefing for the co-authors of SB 840 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in State Capitol Room 4203. The briefing will be followed by a big rally with Moore sponsored by the California Nurses Association (CNA). CNA, Physicians for a National Health Program, and other single payer supporters will rally on the West Steps of the Capitol and then a special premiere of “Sicko” for RNs, doctors and invited guests.

1. I guarantee you the AMA will never support single payer.
Why is beyond me. But they are nothing but a syndicate/trust, witness what they did in Canada when they decided to guarantee everyone health care: went on strike, which only cemented public opinion against them. Oops. So they'll handle the PR very differently now.

2. The Canadian physicians changed their minds very quickly
Seems that the first year single payer was implemented, their incomes went up by a third. That's what happened when eliminating wasteful private insurance freed up money for people to attend to their deferred health care needs.

PNHP happens to be growing much faster than AMA. Most current medical students support some form of universal health care, and providers are getting increasingly pissed off at having their medical decisions overridden by beancounters.

I've seen a commercial by this group, and am glad they are joining forces with Moore on this. So many people have the mistaken impression that it is law suits against doctors and hospitals that drive the cost of healthcare up, but that is just not true. It's the insurance (and pharmaceutical) companies that are mostly to blame.

Personally, I think it is immoral to have hospitals and pharmaceutical companies as publicly traded companies. They drop what their real mission should be -- the health and well-being of PEOPLE -- in place of PROFITS. I used to belong to an investment group (a really good one, overall), and someone suggested we invest in one of the drug companies. I talked the group out of it.

Damn, we have to get away from this profit-making-by-hospitals/pharmaceutial-companies asap. We as a country HAVE TO get back to caring about PEOPLE. I have nothing against a company making a profit, but when it comes to those two types of companies/businesses, I draw the line.

And I REALLY HATE IT when beancounters are making fucking medical decisions based solely on whether such decisions will benefit or hurt the company.

8. Why do some doctors understand this debacle, and want to
cure it,and others are immobilized to support a system where only those with money get health care. The drug co., and the insurance company's have had an unfair advantage when it comes to how our health care will be delivered. Even congress has such great care that they have little interest in changing the system. I'm glad to see that the nurses in this country will be making some noise. I hope it gets real loud so that everyone will not ignore this illness any longer.

11. Steps to Single Payer
I wrote out some things that just about everyone can do, if they're serious about having *real* health care:

Steps to Single Payer

1. Find out if your Representative has signed onto HR676 as a co-sponsor:
http://www.healthcare-now.org/resources/hr676.htm, towards bottom of page

If you find her/him on that list, please call/write to thank them! If they are missing from the list, please call/write and ask them to sign on, and ask those in your district to do the same.

2. Determine if there is a Universal Health Care action group in your state:
http://healthcareforallcolorado.org/?p=7
If so, join and offer to help. Ask for speakers on HR676 or related bills for any organizations you belong to.

3. Watch the short video explaining Single Payer Health Care, and share it with all you know!
http://www.grahamazon.com/sp/whatissinglepayer.php

4. Do all you can to show others how possible it is to have GOOD health care, and encourage one and all to help make it a reality.

5. Do everything you can to encourage others to see SICKO!

6. We can keep griping about the sad state of health care in the U.S, or we can take action!

14. I did think there would be some interest in building on SICKO
Guess I was mistaken.

It's only real if it comes from a national organization, I suppose, rather than the likes of me.

Ah, well... it's only our health care.
