FDA tests found antifreeze chemical; agency unsure if items are counterfeit

Five-ounce tubes of toothpaste labeled Colgate and sold in discount stores in four states are being recalled because they may contain a poisonous chemical, according to the importer.

A Food and Drug Administration official, Doug Arbesfeld, confirmed that testing had found the chemical in a product with the Colgate label. But he said the agency is unsure if it is really Colgate or a counterfeit.

“We are aware that toothpaste is something that’s been counterfeited in the past,” he said. “We don’t want to alarm people unnecessarily.”

There was no immediate reply to an e-mail message left with a Colgate-Palmolive spokesman Wednesday evening.

MS USA Trading, Inc. of North Bergen, N.J., said the toothpaste may contain diethylene glycol, a chemical found in antifreeze.

1. I vote for counterfeit...

The Chinese company selling this stuff doesn't want to suck up the loss and had been trying to sell the stuff to countries other than Panama where a bunch of people had died. Would not surprise me in the least that they relabeled the stuff to pawn it off as legitimate.

That should be grounds for a serious, serious crackdown. Didn't China's ex FDA equivalent chief get sentenced to death recently?

4. Oh, I'm sure that's what the label says. That's probably counterfeit too.

It's elementary. The FDA is watching out for toothpaste "from China" and has sent out alerts to watch out for toothpaste "from China". This toothpaste is "from South Africa", so it was expected to slip through the net. Is it really from South Africa? Or was that just a stop-over point? Or did it ever come from South Africa physically at all? Curious minds want to know.

Are we going to have to get a Certificate of Authenticity with a hologram on it with our toothpaste tube?
