BREAKING CNN: GITMO MAY BE CLOSED!
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 04:59 PM by originalpckelly
:wow:

Here is an article just released 6 minutes ago from WashingtonPost.com
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/21/AR2007062101664.html

They are going to be transferred into the US! Maybe they'll get a shot at a fair trial? That might be too much to worry about.

24. Hmmm.. is Gitmo being closed because of the torture or because Moore exposed their health care?
The last thing Bush wants to be known as is someone who gives out "socialized medicine" to anyone. He doesn't mind the torturer label in the least.

13. Gotta be - the only way they do is is if they have someplace worse;
these people NEVER do what's right, not even under duress. So if what they do appears to be the right thing to do, there must be some truly hideous catch they're not telling us about.

19. Possibly Leavenworth, possibly actual trials according to article:
The advisers will consider a new proposal to shut the center and transfer detainees to one or more Defense Department facilities, including the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where they could face trial, said the officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations.

30. Mauritania:
I was told by the former senior intelligence official and a government consultant that after the existence of secret C.I.A. prisons in Europe was revealed, in the Washington Post, in late 2005, the Administration responded with a new detainee center in Mauritania. After a new government friendly to the U.S. took power, in a bloodless coup d'état in August, 2005, they said, it was much easier for the intelligence community to mask secret flights there.

Seymour Hersh: The General's Report

It's always handy to have a friendly government that's not accountable to its populace, for those occasions when you need to do things in the dark.

Yes, of course it will be shut eventually, but probably not before January 20, 2009, say around Noon-ish.

...who make Paper Shredders! I bet the the market will suddenly get "very tight" in the 2nd half of 2008.

I wonder if their is any way to monitor how much shredded paper is being "output" by the Federal Government around that time?

42. Never mind... Since the news broke, it won't be discussed after all...
President Bush's national security and legal advisers had been scheduled to discuss the move at a meeting Friday, the officials said, but after news of it broke, the White House said the meeting would not take place that day and no decision on Guantanamo Bay's status is imminent.

"It's no longer on the schedule for tomorrow," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. ii]"Senior officials have met on the issue in the past, and I expect they will meet on the issue in the future."
