Just heard on NPR: Jimmy Carter invented micro-brew beer industry

Just heard on NPR: Jimmy Carter invented micro-brew beer industry
He repealed a law against people making beer at home, and people had so much fun with it, some went pro.

If it weren't for micro-brews, I would have stopped drinking beer when I stopped drinking until I was falling down drunk. I would always slam the first two brews because the macro-brews tasted like such shit.

But my main point was, a Democrat created jobs by essentially breaking the monopoly power of big businesses. Republicans talk about caring about small businesses--Democrats just do it.

This is another area that Democrats could be exploiting but don't. Just as the GOP says they are the party of fiscal responsibility and aren't, of national security and aren't, of family values and aren't, they aren't the friend of small business, especially when the small business cuts into the profits of a big business. If you got a wind turbine company getting power plant contracts coal burners want, which side do you think the GOP will come down on?

2. Yeah, micro-brew!
I'd rather pay 7 dollars for the occasional six pack than 12 bucks for a barely drinkable mass-market swill.

I stopped drinking to get drunk a LONG time ago.

What happened here is that when prohibition was repealed, hoem wine-making was legalized, but, supposedly due to an error, beer was left out of the legislation.

In 1978, Congress changed the law to explicitly allow home-brewing, and Carter signed it. I don't recall Carter leading the charge on this issue - he just signed the bill.

But yes, in 1978, home-brewing was legalized, not microbrewing.

Cesare Mondavi and Joseph Gallo made a killing during prohibition shipping wine grapes east to anxious customers.

As I understand it, modern microbrews actually stem from the real ale movement in England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campaign_for_Real_Ale).

Americans, mostly servicemen stationed there, tasted the products of the new small breweries in the UK and started an imitation movement when they got back home. That's why the US microbrew movement started with various English-style ales.

14. Another interesting tidbit, to mull over with your home brew.
One of the micro breweries in California, I believe Rogue, came out with there packaging for their 6 packs the listed the nutritional values of what was in it, and the FDA made them take it off, seems it made the mass produced stuff look as bad as it is.

16. Huh. Funny that this would be posted today.
I just started brewing my first ever alcoholic beverage today. Mead, not beer. Much simpler, much less cost of equipment, but slightly more in the way of cost of brewing materials, what with honey costing more than hops and grains. I'll be checking it in about 6 weeks to see if it's done. Since I didn't follow any one particular set of instructions, I'm not sure exactly how long it will take, but similar meads I've seen recipes for are fairly quick ones, taking no more than two months to ferment.
Just to give it a little extra flavor kick, I decided to make it with a bit of holiday-ish flavor... I added pumpkin pie spices to the mix. If it works well, I'll make another batch for thanksgiving/christmastime. :)

18. Umm...you may be jumping the gun...

Mead usually takes a year at least to mature enough into a product you can be proud of.
And if you use pumpkin pie spice mix, you might have to wait even longer. Clove is a dragon among the spices...a teeny little dab'll do ya.

I went overboard on the cloves once and it took three years aging before the flavor mellowed out...but damn, it was worth the wait! :beer:

The problem a lot of people have with homemade wine is that they want to drink it as soon as it stops fermenting...so of course it's godsawful stuff. :puke:

The magic of aging and the flavors blending and getting acquainted is taking place in an anaerobic environment...at least, it had better be anaerobic, otherwise the stuff will oxidize and all you'll have is vinegar...so it takes a looooong time.

19. There are some quicker meads you can brew
and what I did was similar. Still, I'll probably just taste a teaspoon once every other week or so to see how it matures once it's pretty much done brewing.
And don't worry, I learned my lesson about spices in a liquid as opposed to on a solid piece of food the minute I tried to cook a stew for the first time. I used about as much pepper as I normally would have for that amount of food... whew. It was damn spicy. :) Just from a little black pepper.
