'Dogfight': Brian Williams Losing More Viewers Than Katie Couric

Media Bistro: 'Dogfight': Brian Williams Losing More Viewers Than Katie Couric

The lastest nightly news ratings are out, and Brian Williams and his NBC Nightly News are losing to Charlie Gibson and World News Tonight. For his part, Williams calls it a "back-and-forth dogfight." Although Katie Couric is in a distant third place, Nielsen reports that Williams has lost over 246,000 more viewers than Couric over the past 39 weeks. Good news for Couric and bad news for Williams, who also got some tough love from the AP's David Bauder:

The simplest possible explanation, and toughest to deal with: more people want to spend that half hour with Gibson than Williams. Gibson, 64, is an older man anchoring a news format favored by older viewers (Williams is 48). He's also more affable and self-effacing on the air, with less starch than the more formal Williams. Some see Williams as talking to, rather than with, his audience....

3. GE...We Bring Good Wars to Life!!!!
Maybe people aren't too inclined to spend their time with the fellow that Frank Luntz, GOP pollster and fat bastard, called "The GOP go-to guy" who was so successful because of his "nearly indetectable ideological bias..."

You know how it is--Ya lie down with dogs, ya get up with fleas...

That would be a good start.

10. I assume he's doing that routine to try and raise his standing with a younger demographic
That tells me NBC is playing it for the long haul. That's probably as good a strategy as there is for a medium pretty much bound to lose viewer share in the coming years.

Man, Charlie Gibson is 64. When Cronkite got his gig at CBS he was 46 and already had more gravitas than Gibson. In fact, Cronkite retired at 65. We really are such an aging country.

9. Their news is stale, their viewpoint is biased.
I haven't bothered watching the Nightly News Entertainment in years.

11. What about the numbers of people who just "stop watching..."
Neilsen only measures the numbers of people who watch. How likely is it that a Neilsen family will "stop watching TV"?

TV is overall losing viewers...someone should mention that. I am not a "orginal". If I stopped watching TV because I was sick of it's trite crap and consumer driven mentality. I imagine millions of others have as well.
