Planned Parenthood clinic won’t face charges

The attorney general is to decide this week whether to file criminal counts against a Wichita doctor.

Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison on Tuesday cleared Overland Park’s Planned Parenthood of criminal wrongdoing, but predecessor Phill Kline’s scrutiny of the clinic may not be over.

Yet to come is Morrison’s decision on whether to file charges against Wichita abortion provider George Tiller, who also was investigated by Kline, formerly the attorney general and now the Johnson County district attorney. An announcement regarding Tiller is expected by the end of the week.

As attorney general, Kline began an investigation of the two clinics in 2004. He alleged the clinics were covering for child rapists by performing abortions on underage girls and failing to report their suspicions to police. He also alleged that Tiller’s clinic, which specializes in late-term abortions, used bogus mental health diagnoses to justify otherwise illegal late-term abortions.

In a letter released by Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, Morrison told the clinic’s attorney that his investigation was over and that he would return the medical records subpoenaed from the clinic.

“We have interviewed witnesses, and we have analyzed all of the evidence of the applicable Kansas criminal laws,” Morrison wrote. “We will not be filing any charges against your client.”

Back story: Phill Kline is the former Kansas AG who was looking at women's private medical records to prove a case against Planned Parenthood and Dr. George Tiller. He was defeated in November by Paul Morrison, who was the county prosecutor in Johnson County, the largest county in the state. Morrison switched parties from republican to democrat to run against Kline. In a bizarre series of events, Kline and Morrison traded jobs, when republican precinct committee members in Johnson County appointed Kline to serve out the remainder of Morrison's term.

1. HA HA I loved this.
Have you seen the "double L" KC Pitch? I have not read it yet but one of the JC KEC members brought each of us a copy at our board meeting and Pride event last Sunday.

I love seeing Phill take it in the teeth. I am warming to Morrison and this I love.

3. I like the Pitch
I used to love it but since it was bought by someone else it is not so good. Still, it does have some good stuff in it.
