SANTA FE, N.M. - New Mexico has a new medical marijuana law with a twist: It requires the state to grow its own. The law, effective Sunday, not only protects medical marijuana users from prosecution — as 11 other states do — but requires New Mexico to oversee a production and distribution system for the drug.

"The long-term goal is that the patients will have a safe, secure supply that doesn't mean drug dealers, that doesn't mean growing their own," said Reena Szczepanski, director of Drug Policy Alliance New Mexico. The state Department of Health must issue rules by Oct. 1 for the licensing of marijuana producers and in-state, secured facilities, and for developing a distribution system.

The law was passed in March and signed by Gov. Bill Richardson, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

2. I think patients should be allowed to grow their own;
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 10:38 AM by lynnertic
it costs nothing to do (not that I would know, but I'm told), the plant is a weed for crying out loud.

Having the state grow marijuana just means that the sick and dying will have to spend money (and these are people who need money the most don't you think?) buying stuff that could have been free.

(edited to add disclaimer)
:)

7. Yes but
under current federal law they could get arrested.

If the state is growing it, then when the feds try to stop them, it creates an interesting federal-state showdown that doesn't use the patients / growers as pawns.

Ultimately we should all be allowed to grow it, imo, but I think under the current situation this is an EXCELLENT approach.

6. Meanwhile in liberal NY
I'm being refused treatment for my depression because I was stupid enough to say my wife and I like to smoke some bongs while watching a movie so I have to go to "A Program" for my weed addiction before they'll help me for depression. Doesn't matter that it helps my depression and my arthritis, chronic back pain, nausea from my anti-D meds, etc. etc.

8. That is just so ridiculous.
We are in CA and my husband just got a 'recommendation' from a doctor for him to use and grow it. All it took was one visit to a mj doc. He explained all the laws pertaining to having the recommendation. Weed addiction? What a joke. I'm sorry that they are so shitty to you. Sounds like it's just an excuse to exclude you from using the services you have been paying into. BTW, my husband got it for ADD and his meds kill his appetite.

9. I tried to tell them for me it's been even a "reverse gateway drug"
Used to do coke, acid by the handful, tried crack, tried meth, used to be a really heavy drinker to the point it nearly ended my marriage a few times. Now I'm cool with pulling a few tubes and watching "Star Wars" for a nights entertainment. Evil stuff that pot.

10. I guess pot-smokers can't be trusted
to know what's a problem for them and what's not. They have to decide for you. That's crazy! MJ keeps me sane in an insane world. Good luck to you Shadow.

11. I wonder, if one has a prescription for medical mj and also works where
random drug testing is company policy, would they be exempt from testing or not penalized when the results came back positive?
