they paid for the content, shouldn't they own it, instead of a competitor making money off it?

19. well, yes. MSN paid for the exclusive rights to the webcast in the US
why should someone else make money off it? you know that youtube is a profit making enterprise, owned by a Microsoft rival, right? you can watch all the clips you want, you just need to go to the MSN website to do it. What's the problem, exactly?

41. of course
but greed is what built the internet in the first place. Greed is why we both have those little stars by our names, greed is why there is constant innovation on the web, greed is why the guys who built youtube sold it for a billion bucks each instead of building it as a non-profit information clearing house. Greed is why Al Gore sold the rights to do this to MSN in the first place. think of all the people who watched this on the web, maybe because they don't have cable (like me) without MSN getting those rights in the first place, the concert would never have been available to anyone outside the many venues.

42. disagree
greed built the net? how?

greed is not why we have stars by our names. if greed was involved we'd be required to pay, pay lots... we wouldn't be asked to pay what we can afford, and only if we want to.

greed is not the fuel for innovation. that's a bullshit myth and i'm sick of it. innovators innovate because they enjoy thinking and solving problems and improving things... not for a quick buck. any innovation that's motivated purely by the profit motive is nearly guaranteed to be crap.

49. so do you think that the DU Admins
would still be here 7 years later if there was no money in it? think their wives would be happy about that?

greed may not be the fuel for innovation, but it feeds the capital that makes innovation possible. Greed is why there is high speed internet. greed is why there is streaming video. greed is why there are websites in the first place. greed is why there is Google. greed is why there is Java, greed is why there is html, greed is why there is an Apple Computer, all those things exist because someone thought they could make money off them. Greed is why MSN signed up to broadcast the event on TV and on the internet. that's why it's there.

MSN still has all of it available on demand on their own site, paid for by their advertisers. I think there are reasonable guidelines covering that sort of thing in copyright laws and they're well within their rights.

Besides the quality of the MSN video is much, much better:

Go to this site:

You have to wait until ALL the Venue+Playlists populate under the "Watch Video" heading. Then, in succession, click on the appropriate column selections, left to right:

(1) Venue+Playlists: USA-New York.
(2) Set Lists: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
(3) Videos: Speech.

Dumbass move, especially since it having the video available on youtube relieves overburdened MSN servers.

32. Because that's how the internet works
Sharing. YouTube would never have been YouTube without sharing in the first place. Many people will never see anything from MSN if it isn't posted on YouTube. They see it on YouTube, then go back to MSNBC to watch more. Microsoft just cannot understand that sharing creates a natural monopoly online, it works in reverse of cutthroat competition.

40. right, and there were links on all of these postings
on Youtube directing people to the MSN site to see more? oh right, Youtube doesn't allow you to do that. And YouTube would never have been YouTube without flat out copyright infringements, for the most part. it would have been a quaint little site, except you can go there and see content for free, that someone else might want you to pay for.

Does Google share what it has paid for with Microsoft? seems not likely, right? if it was this important to the owners of the content (Al Gore and co, who does know just a wee bit about the internets) then why did they sell exclusive rights to MSN? Blame Al Gore, his group signed the contract allowing MSN to do this. If the content is available elsewhere on the web, as this one is, then it shouldn't be on YouTube without the permission of the copyright holder. it's really pretty simple in concept.

48. It's still how the internet works
You can ramble on about the internet advertising model all you want. The internet still works best with sharing. You get a group of people in a town who all share links and promote each other, and you've got a vacation destination. You get a town that fights with each other, you've got a town that's lost online. Extrapolate that to any industry and you've got the same thing. You either play together and create a community, or you end up lost in the ethersphere. Maybe if MSN had figured this out years ago, they wouldn't have lost search to Google in the first place. That is what this is about you know, not the copyrights on these particular videos. MSN hates Google. I hate them both.

33. They just alienated a large youth audience AGAIN. Goodwill goes a long way in selling product.
And they just threw that away. It also is totally against the original purpose of the web, which they never got in the first place.

Amazing, they should be much smarter than that by now.

Al Gore's partner is Kevin Wall, producer of Live-8.
Wall is CEO of Control Room, a global internet consulting firm, and a venture fund capitalist. Live Earth’s business partners include Bill Gates’ Microsoft Network MSN, Mercedes Benz’s Smart, and Pepsi. US ticket sales are entirely under the control of the online auction site, e-Bay, one of the world’s biggest corporations.
