Prince at the Super Bowl.
I thought he was fucking brilliant! From the moment he whispered, "Dearly beloved" to begin "Let's Go Crazy", through "Proud Mary", into "All Along the Watchtower" in which he absolutely shredded the guitar riff, and, finally, "Purple Rain", I thought it was the best Super Bowl halftime show I've ever seen (and I've seen all 41 of them).

15. My son thinks that Michael Jackson must be eating his heart out
over how young Prince looks. I couldn't believe it myself.

3. Don't leave out the Foo Fighters cover - that was brilliant.
All of it was very good - and I agree it's the best I've ever seen. My daughter, who doesn't know Prince other than being some dude from the 80's - was amazed by his guitar playing.

when she flew out by helicopter after singing I Will Survive. Like everything she does, it was spectacular I thought. And no wardrobe malfunctions!

11. I was very happy with it
one of the best I've seen, with all the overblown crap they've put on it was really nice to see a real artist up there. As another real plus, he wasn't lip-synching.

17. I liked it too. He sure has aged well.
Doesn't look much older than when he did the purple rain movie. Also, liked the way he got away with his phallic symbol guitar at the end.

Wonder if they will ever have janet jackson on again. I know the fundies went nuts when they saw a boob on TV and got the FCC involved. If boobs aren't supposed to be on TV why do they keep showing Bush. :)

20. Grupo Fantasma........Prince's pet band
Grupo Fantasma and the glamourous life
03.02.2007 21:03

You can't have a fairy tale without a Prince and in this one the kissed frog is an Austin band called Grupo Fantasma.

Once upon a time — Friday night on Miami's South Beach to be exact — the powerhouse cumbia funk band backed the artist currently known as Prince at a pre-Super Bowl party for CBS affiliates. The pint-sized musical giant, who'll perform at halftime of the Super Bowl today, joined the 11-member Grupo on their song "Chocolate," did one of his newer songs then led a 20-minute jam on Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" that had the lucky 500 guests dancing wildly.

This was without Prince and the band ever rehearsing, as the notoriously spontaneous Minneapolis mega-star merely sent Fantasma a disc of songs he'd be possibly do and they worked them up in their chilly St. Elmo Rd. rehearsal space. From South Austin to South Beach, with funk.

In the past two and a half months, Grupo Fantasma, which formed in Austin in 1999 (coincidentially, a Prince LP title), has become a Prince pet. His Purple Majesty not only flies them to Las Vegas every Thursday to play his 3121 nightclub, but he brought them along as the house band at his Golden Globes party Jan. 15 . Prince almost never has an opening act, but he put Grupo on the bill at his concert Wednesday near Miami.

"It's really a trip," said Fantasma guitarist Adrian Quesada. "We were all thrilled just to see him in the audience (at 3121, which is in the Rio hotel and casino), but to play with one of your idols... that just blows us away."

How does something like this happen — a band whose three albums have sold a combined 18,000 copies and who still tour by van — becomes the current go-to band of one of music's greatest icons?

The big wheel of fortune started rolling when band manager Mike Crowley sent a copy of "Grupo Fantasma Comes Alive," recorded live at Antone's for $500, to Prince's promoter Paul Gongaware. The two have been friends since the '70s when they worked together at Concerts West in Seattle. Gongaware passed the CD on to Prince, who was looking for groups to play "Latin Night" at his club. ..cont'd

21. Prince?
Give me a break.

What we need is some real entertainment at the Super Bowl. Something that holds up to the momentousness, the spectacle and the deeper meaning of this, the singel greatest event of the American year.

I humbly suggest public executions carried out to hip hop versions of Sousa marches.

24. Woh he is a, if not THE consummate entertainer of a certain smallish "epi generation"
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 04:15 PM by stellanoir
that is so-o-o oft misunderstood. Not a boomer. Not an X-er. But quirkier than either for sure.

He was completely unphased by the enormity of the venue nor of the rain. He was AMAZING.

I wondered how the grips and the gaffs warded off possible electrocution, eeeks. Gotta love those techies.

So. . . may we all have opportunity to change our names to symbols and get to perform on stages and perform on musical instruments shaped like them, in our times. Mine will be a slinky for lots of reasons.

Oh. . . a chicken in every pot (vegans can have a chunk of tofu,) and a toilet on every porch (inside joke though the porch is outside) God willin' to boot. Just Kidding.

No seriously, people will inevitably knock him for his JW stuff, but he is such an immense talent and performer, perhaps consider forgiving him that. It's probably just a phase, given the intense mutability of his epi generation. He'll more than likely, morph again. Stay tuned.

That tragedy he had with that baby prior to his conversion musta been overwhelmingly heart rending.

Bless his soul and talent some more. :woohoo:

From the terrific stage, to the marching band, to Prince doing it IN THE DAMN POURING RAIN, he was fantastic. I agree, this was the best half-time show, maybe EVER. Beat the hell outta the tired Stones production last time.

27. Prince one of the most underrated artists of all time, imo
He usually gets lumped into the "cheesy 80's pop" category.

Truth is, the man is an amazing artist. He writes his own songs (heck, he writes songs for other people too, a few big hits), plays his own instruments, sings, performs like a rock star ...

Let's face it, he doesnt get the cred he deserves because America is homophobic and has always considered his gender identity confusing.
