House Will Vote to Change Course in Iraq This Week
July 10th, 2007 by Karina

The House Democratic leadership tonight announced that the House will vote later this week on a bill to change course in Iraq. The legislation, sponsored by Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton, would begin the responsible redeployment of U.S. troops within 120 days and complete redeployment by April 1, 2008. The President would have to report to Congress why troops should remain in Iraq for limited purposes such as to fight terrorism or to train Iraqi forces.

Speaker Pelosi:

The American people have rejected the President’s failed policies in Iraq and his war without end. The situation on the ground in Iraq is worsening, and the Iraqi government has failed to meet the benchmarks set in law. This week, every Member of the House will have an opportunity to vote to set a new direction in Iraq. The American people want Congress to bring our troops home, refocus our efforts to fighting terrorism, and hold the Bush Administration accountable.

Chairman Skelton:

A change in course in Iraq is overdue. We must begin the responsible redeployment of our forces from Iraq. The strength of the American military depends on its readiness which is currently depleted after four years in the middle of a deteriorating sectarian conflict. Our military must transition to a limited presence that protects enduring American interests and restores the readiness of our forces.

UPDATE: The text of the legislation is available on our current legislation page for the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act>>

1. Sounds nice, Speaker Pelosi, but we've been burned before
I know you voted to kill funding the first time around, but now you get to prove your chops as Speaker.

3. Well, how could that be. She's a corporatist warmonger, dontcha know.
And of course these are the do-nothing Dems. So surely you're mistaken.

7. But if it's not impeachment, will it be good enough?
That's what I'm wondering. Our focus seemed to come off ending the war and onto impeachment instead.

It will for me; end this blasted war first, get people safer, and worry
about all the other problems after that.

18. They voted to cut off funding months ago
Bush vetoed it. This isn't a change in course. Its taking advantage of recent opportunities.

5. This is EXACTLY the point of all the pressure we've been exerting,
so shove it.

8. I thought the point was impeachment
that ending the war wasn't enough.

13. The point is pushing the Dems in the right direction
on every issue, the main point being to end the war ASAP. Without the pressure they will return to Clintonian triangulation.

23. This is what bothers me. They are telling us we will be there for many many years

"Our military must transition to a limited presence that protects enduring American interests and restores the readiness of our forces.

It's headed toward a kinder and gentler occupation. But still an occupation.

Why not push HR1234 which would get all of our troops out and provide a chance that Iraq could succeed?

Have you read it Little Clarkie? If you have what do you think?

Ask for your state's Rep or Senator.

Ask them to end this f***ing war now.

9. Depends on if we can get enough votes
If we can get 2/3rds in each chamber then Bush can take the anticipated veto and shove it.

12. Good for her!
Now she needs to stick to her word and keep sending this bill back over and over and over again after every veto. Make the president look like the bad guy here.

19. Oh, most definitely it won't
They'll say it was because Cindy forced Nancy Pelosi in to it. You can bet on it.

That's where she started anyway.

to say that a change in course is overdue is the understatement of the century.
