R.I.P. Corbin Harney
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 07:01 AM by SpiralHawk
I just received word that Corbin Harney has passed away this week. He was a kind, generous, and insightful American Indian spiritual and political leader, a member of the Western Shoshone Nation. His passing is a loss to all who now dwell on Turtle Island (North America)

http://www.shundahai.org/index.html#statement

From a statement by his family:

July 10, 2007 (TurtleIsland). Corbin Harney Spiritual Leader of the Western Shoshone Nation crossed over at 11:00 a.m. this morning in a house on a sacred mountain near Santa Rosa, CA (Turtle Island). He had dedicated his life to fighting the nuclear testing and dumping.

That battle claimed his life through cancer.

Before he passed, he said to remember: “We are one people. We cannot separate ourselves now.”

According to witnesses present, in the morning fog, the spirits of four Shoshoni dog soldiers were outside on horseback before Corbin’s passing. But then one of the Shoshone present, Santiago Lozada, yelled “Tosawi Tosawi!” (White Knife). And then the fog shifted and there were thousands of spirits waiting.

Corbin passed peacefully at the end. He was only worried that he still had more to do. When he finally let go and went with the dog soldiers, Red Wolf Pope, grandson of Rolling Thunder, was present and sang him the Tosawi death song to call the dog soldiers to come take him home. Golden eagles continue to circle the house hours after his crossing.”

... Corbin also authored two books: “The Way It Is: One Water, One Air, One Earth” (Blue Dolphin Publishing, 1995) and a forthcoming book, “The Nature Way”. Numerous documentaries have been made about his work and message. I

Corbin Harney is descended from generations of Newe (Shoshone) traditional healers and was always grateful for the many extraordinary teachers who shared their knowledge in his lifetime.

With the loving touch of the dancers' feet -- to give her back some love and pleasure and appreciation with respect for all the Earth gives to us: food, water, shelter, and great beauty to lift our spirits on up high...

Thank you, meegwich, Grandfather Corbin, leader of the dance (shown in the CENTER of the circle depicted below).

I want to inform as many people as possible of the death of this man, and what his life meant to everyone who now claims North America as their home (not their Homeland, a fascist republicon term that Grandfather Corbin would have reviled).

There are many old prophecies of Turtle Island (North America) that speak of the mingling of the colors: Red, White, Yellow, Brown, and Black. The prophecies warned specifically that people of hate would try to keep the colors and faiths apart from each other, but that if we ignored the Small Spirits, and if we were wise and respected and learned from one another, we would find a way to take care of each other, to have our spiritual lives according to our own personal intelligence and judgement, and to take care of the Earth which makes survival possible for every single person. If we break this Sacred Hoop apart because of hate, jealously and greed -- All will suffer. All will drink bitter waters. All will breathe poison air. And on and on with a litany of harsh consequences. The prophecies are explicit, and have been handed down for generations with meticulous care in the oral tradition of this North American continent, Turtle Island.

Grandfather Corbin is someone who knew those old teachings, and who respected and lived them -- judging people not by the color of their skin or the size of their bankroll, but by what was in their hearts and they way they lived their lives.

For that reason, I kick this thread a final time this morning before departing -- and I invite other readers who are uplifted by reading about Corbin's life and work -- to kick this thread a few times today. There are many who need the inspiration he gave as part of his life...

Meegwich, Spiral Hawk

10. Download Corbin's songs that he sings at each sunrise ceremony
The Storyscape Project recorded Corbin Harney's Mother Earth Songs (Newe Huvia) in May of 2001. The songs speak of the sacredness of the earth and our relationship with its precious life and spirit. Harney is a Western Shoshone elder and leader and an internationally known anti-nuclear weapons and indigenous rights activist whose traditional lands has been used as a nuclear weapons testing grounds for the last 50 years.

13. Corbin's message about everlasting nuclear poison
MESSAGE FROM CORBIN HARNEY,
WESTERN SHOSHONE SPIRITUAL LEADER

My people, the Western Shoshone, have been affected by nuclear weapons testing and waste dumping since 1951 when they opened the Nevada Test Site within the boundaries of my country Newe Segobia. I have seen what has happened to my people with increased leukemia and cancer rates throughout my country. I have seen how this nuclear contamination has affected the water that we drink and the air that we breathe. It has effected the plant life, the animal life and the bird life. I have seen this through out the world as I travel. No one can escape from this mess that the governments have created. I think that we all see this.

The people that made this mess just want to sweep it under the rug and pretend that it is not there. For us the rug is Yucca Mountain and the Nevada Test Site in my country. The US government and nuclear industry just want to sweep the nuclear mess under yucca mountain and go on producing more nuclear waste. We can not let that happen.

We have to make the U.S. governments and corporations realize that they can not produce any more nuclear waste or nuclear weapons. The two go hand in hand.
