Mere speculation on my part but if Blanco appoints a successor to Vitter... |
|
I'm not at all sure it will be a Democrat. There is another thread stating that she is in "negotiation with the LA GOP" on this subject. It seems to me that with all the hell the GOP gave Blanco during Hurricane Katrina that she would tell them to go suck an egg, but I wonder if she would negotiate naming a Republican to replace Vetter in return for token opposition if she runs for re-election? Just a thought, since her approval ratings in LA are not good.
Of course, this all is just speculation and I'm not so sure that Vitter will resign anyway.

1. Maybe if she wants Congress to allocate $ to her state for roads, etc., |
|
she'll reconsider the wisdom of appointing a Republican.

Blanco is not running for reelection.
Jindal (Republican) is already running a strong campaign for governor.
I wish it weren't so, but....

4. so the question becomes |
|
what possible motivation could she have to negotiate at all?
It does absolutely nothing for her.

3. First off--I doubt Vitter will resign |
|
He will just say God forgave him (God communicates regularly with humans, but only registered Republicans) and reappear duly repentant and more right-wing than ever--unless Rove can get him into a light private plane, that is, and they need all of those they can find for the next election cycle.
Plus, if Blanco is not running for re-election, what incentive would she have to appoint a Republican if Vitter did resign? The only thing I could think of would be if she made a trade-off deal with the governor of South Dakota to appoint a Republican if the guy in SD would appoint a Democrat to replace Tim Johnson (maybe Tom Daschle if there were any justice, which there is not).
I don't see a happy ending here, though.

5. Why negotiate and expect the republicans will support her |
|
remember how they were so partisan and wouldn't give the democrats the time of day. And Slusherbrainner from WI going in to a conference and taking the mike away from the Dem's and shutting off power.
Right then and there is I were a dem congress person, now that we have a majority in the house and a slight slight lead in the senate give one inch to the S.O.B.'s.. I would slap the creeps down with every chance I got. And Blanco, if the rules say she can appoint a democrat and not a republican I would do it so damn quick the republicans would be spinning like a top.

6. She'd be a fool to trust a republican promise (think The Scorpion and the Frog) |
|
Believe you me, the republicans will promise ANYTHING to retain a seat, but don't expect them to follow through on promises. It's not in their nature to live up to their agreements.

If he can lay low for 2 more weeks he's got the entire August break for it to all just go away. And given how the media is, some new shiny object is bound to come along.
