The Iraqis understand that the political maneuvering in this country is killing them and destroying their country. While the politicians in both parties weigh the effects of the war on the electorate here and watch the polls, afraid to admit defeat, the Iraqis die or flee their country. They are the hapless pawns in our political games.

U.S. Democrats are gathering momentum to blame their adversaries, the Democrats, over the Iraq debacle. The former have come to the realization that victory is no longer possible while the latter, and particularly their boss in the White House, are proceeding with their folly that triumph is still within reach.
Neither policy is of any benefit to Iraq. Both ways we are doomed. While the two continue sparring in Congress, their master in the White House remains unmoved.
But their skirmishes in the Congress and the pages of U.S. newspapers are doing no good for the Iraqi people. Their fearsome army has failed in winning the war in Iraq and taming barefoot rebels in central Iraq. The sectarian strife is intensifying with every passing day. The sectarian infighting which is pitting one residential quarter against the other, one village against the other, one town against the other, one region against the other is spreading like bush fire.
If the troops are withdrawn, it is very likely for the current sectarian fight to expand and intensify. If the troops stay, it will be the harbinger for many more calamities. Iraq’s neighbors, particularly those which see the U.S. as an enemy, will use the Iraqi battle arena for score settling.
It is the occupation which is the reason for all our miseries. It is the occupation which has plunged us into this vicious circle of sectarian and ethnic infighting. Perhaps those saying an end to occupation is the only way for some light at the end of our dark tunnel are right.
