Gorbachev affirms Russia's defence pull-out

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev says Russia's decision to call off its participation in a key Cold War weapons treaty is appropriate.

Once the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev originally signed the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty in 1990, as a means of limiting the deployment of foreign troops and heavy weapons in the region.

Mr Gorbachev says Russia's decision to suspend the treaty was entirely justified and an urgent call for constructive talks with the West.
