Broadband users in 30 of the world's most developed countries are getting greatly differing speeds and prices, according to a report.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report says 60% of its member countries net users are now on broadband.

The report said countries that had switched to fibre networks had the best speeds at the lowest prices.

In Japan net users have 100Mbps lines, 10 times higher than the OECD average.

Japan's price for broadband per megabit per second is the lowest in the OECD at $0.22 (0.11p), said the report. The most expensive is Turkey at $81.13 (£40.56).
In the US, the cheapest megabit per second broadband connection is $3.18 (£1.59) while in the UK it is $3.62 (£1.81).

I don't understand what that means in terms of monthly payments.

I think cable broadband runs about $50 a month here in the USA,
while DSL runs about $25. So, the monthly fees in other countries
are essentially about the same, except in Japan.

Is that right?

we have a monopoly cable provider that kicksback $3-400,000 to the city each year.

the city is letting ATT put up so-called free wireless around town, low quality wireless loaded with ad, while ATT refuses to provide phone based dsl because then we could get dsl from another provder if we could get access. If you want more than the free wireless loaded with ads you cannot block then to get faster service using the same wireless network the costs are up to $6 PER DAY (LT Times article).

so, who is getting the campaign contributions to seal the deals?
