Sen. Siplin Ordered To Pay Fine In Controversial Football-Game Traffic Incident
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A hearing officer in Orange County, Fla., ruled that state Sen. Gary Siplin violated a traffic law during a football game parking-spot incident that sparked an ethics complaint against the senator.
Embattled state Sen. Gary Siplin was in traffic court Tuesday fighting a $115 ticket for refusing to obey traffic laws during last year's Florida Classic football game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
"On its face, this is just about a traffic ticket," Local 6's Mike DeForest said. "But some say it shows the senator may have tried to use his position to try to get a good parking spot for a football game and ignored traffic laws."
According to an Orange County sheriff's deputy who stopped Siplin, the senator tried driving his sport utility vehicle down a closed road near the Citrus Bowl about two hours before the game.
The deputy said he ordered Siplin to move his car at least five times but the senator refused.
He said Siplin also asked to speak to a department supervisor.
