Perhaps we should support Rudy's candidacy |
|
I know, I know...."What the hell is he talking about??!!!"
Here is my argument:
Rudy is attractive to many moderates and could be a threat to take swing votes from the Dems should he become the candidate. The problem with Rudy is that he will have an uphill battle to get the nomination. We would be well served to publicly state how a president Rudy would be 'acceptable' to liberals because he has liberal sensibilities on social issues.
Now, I know we don't want him as president, but just having us shrug our shoulders in public and saying "Could be worse" will cause great hair pulling and gnashing of teeth from our fundamentalist brethren. This will be used as a missile against Rudy by his Republican base, and he won't even be considered as a VP candidate.
Just a thought.

I'm not supporting anyone for president that I don't want to be president. Bush has been enough to change those ideas.

5. I don't mean literally |
|
I am talking about public statements indicating that he is liberal on social issues and that liberals appreciate a Republican candidate who is progressive on these social issues.
The right wing would run him out of town on a rail.

If anything, Bush has shown us that our worst possible fears can come true. Anyone that runs for president can win.
If what you're saying is to editorialize Guiliani into a liberal, OK. I get what you mean. There could be a point to it. However, that does make it possible that he will win by pulling in a different group of supporters that may not listen to the right wing. Also, there's been a number of threads lately talking about how we should support the most fanatically brainwarped conservative for the Republican nomination, and it seems to me that a strategy like that is asking for serious trouble.

4. No way. Rudy has the potential to take swing votes away from dems |
|
because of moderate social policies. I know many think he would be easy to beat, but if he is nominated we would have to fight to win NY--and if you don't think so--think again.

I think that the right aren't going to love Guilliani but they could learn to live with him, but he would make our candidate have to work a lot harder. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

I'm not talking about literal support, I'm talking about statements on the airwaves indicating that his social positions are progressive. This will kill any hope he has for nomination by his base.

could carry your state (WI)? I ask because I'm in Illinois and I just don't see him carrying IL. I've heard more than one GOP voter say that they don't like him...he's too NYC.
Cheers

I dont think there is much of a swing vote anymore. The country is a polarized as its probably ever been and will be for the near future.

Sorry about that.
I've been around a long time, so clearly am not a disruptor.
The post makes a case that Rudy is not acceptable to the right wing fundies, and we should point out his progressive mindset surrounding social issues so he WON'T be the nominee. Perhaps I should have been more clear as to my thought process. I do not endorse Rudy for president nor should any clear thinking progressive. He is a threat to us though because he is attractive to those who call themselves "independents". With the news calling him "America's Mayor", he will have a lot of positive plugs as a leader via the MSM. We need to point out how frickin liberal he is when it comes to some social issues in order to piss off the GOP base so they WON'T vote for him.

Clearly you've never actually lived under a Giuliani administration. The man is an arrogant nightmare, he is in love with police of all stripes, is authoritarian, dismissive, abrasive and racist.
The only reason he has "liberal" values is because his personal life is such an unadulterated mess.
Please. No.

with what they've saddled themselves with ... pro-gay, abortion, gun-control Rudy ...
Hmm, I remember that "gays" like to have names which could go either way ... Rudy is a name which could be male or female ...

18. NO! Firstly Rudy is NOT acceptable to this liberal |
|
But thats just me.
But anyway, I actually think he is all the more dangerous for those reasons you list. I wish Frist hadn't withdrawn. By 2008, this country would have had more than enough of the fundies imo. I hope its not someone like Guiliani or Hagel...

20. If it's Hill vs. Rudy |
|
Even I am not sure who'd I vote for, if Rudy remains firm on his stand on gays rights and abortion.
Among the current front-runners, Rudy would score a lot of swing votes and independents. More so if Hillary or someone equally as polarizing is the Dem's nom. And this would be bad if we want a Dem in the White House in 2009.

21. The only way I'd do that is... |
|
...if Rudy looked like he could get the nomination but not win the general. I'd prop up someone in the Republican primary who could fail. But then I'd have to weigh whether or not my Democratic primary vote would be worth sacrificing. Last time, I think it had already been decided for Kerry by the time it was Illinois' turn to vote, so it may be that I could take that opportunity to mess around with the Republicans next time.

24. I wouldn't suggest actually voting for the guy in the primaries |
|
The point is to get his GOP base nervous about him so they won't vote for him.
If he or McCain becomes the nominee for the GOP, we will independents dropping a general election vote for him. If a whack job fundy is the nominee, then we get the independents.
If progressive talking heads say things like, "Well Rudy has the right idea about gay marriage at least", then his base will never vote for him.
