How we could actually "win" in Iraq. A thoughtful piece worth reading.

The author argues that what is needed is a state, not the toothless "government" we have created there now, and for the US to make peace with Iran...since Iran is going to win anyway unless we occupy Iraq forever which we can't do unless Bush makes us a police state (no, I don't think that will happen.)

1. Yes, we have to make peace with Iran.

But they have their own George to deal with. He can't give in to anything Bush wants. A Dem in office, however, allows him to save face and begin negotiations. So ain't nothin' gonna happen till our George is gone.

There is no way to call it victory. Iraq was a stable state, a stable state that was a check against Iran before the invasion. Restoring a stable state that is more against us than the previously existing stable state is no victory. It is probably the best we can hope for.
