Hagee, Israel backers push a get-tough policy
WASHINGTON — Inside a reserved Senate room, several hundred evangelical activists who came by plane and bus Wednesday waited for the arrival of Texas' two senators.

As their leader, Pastor John Hagee, entered the room, they erupted in cheers, snapping photos of the face of modern Christian Zionism, a movement that promotes Israel as a biblical mandate.

The room turned silent as Hagee greeted Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn near the stage. Hagee looked the senators in the eye and said: "These people are from Texas — and they are voters."

--
Pastor of the 18,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio and a world-reknowned TV evangelist, Hagee organized the lobbying blitz (the second in two years) to try to exert political power in Middle East policy, including consideration of a pre-emptive strike on Iran.

--
Known for his fiery apocalyptic sermons and books, such as "Jerusalem Countdown," Hagee, 67, is no stranger to conservative Republican politics and mobilizing Christians to vote.

...human being who sincerely cares about Israel's citizenry and their long term security could possibly align themselves with this purveyor of death (Hagee) -- he wants Rapture -- he sees Israel as the tool with which to bring it about.

4. An excellent book...
...which gives a very good overview of the whole mindset of the Hagee crowd is:

"The End Of Days" by Gershom Gorenberg (Free Press, 2000) is "thin" but very good on issues surrounding the Temple Mount.

"On the Road to Armageddon: How Evangelicals Became Israel's Best Friend" by Timothy Weber (Baker, 2004) a more encompassing and detailed look at how Dispensationalism came to America and became the predominant for of apocalyptic eschatology.

"When Time Shall Be No More" by Paul Boyer (Harvard University Press,1992) is part of Harvard University's ongoing American Society and Cultural Studies series, and presents a very readable account of "Prophecy Belief" in America, with emphasis on the period from the Cold War through the Carter years.

The Hagee crowd is working to "assist God" in bringing on the apocalypse, much as Pope Urban II was when he listed eschatological imperatives for launching the First Crusade...and we all know how THAT ended...
