Venezuela To Begin Search For Oil Off Cuba

NEW YORK, USA (Bloomberg): Petroleos de Venezuela SA, Venezuela's state-run oil company, will search for light oil off the coast of Cuba starting on Wednesday along with Cuban company CUPET.

The effort will encompass six blocks covering 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles) and will involve 4,400 square kilometers of deepwater seismic mapping, Petroleos de Venezuela said Tuesday in a statement on its website.

The move will deepen energy cooperation between two countries that have found common cause in asserting their independence from US foreign policy, drawing criticism from Washington. Sanctions prohibit US oil companies and contractors from working in Cuba and bans the import of all Cuban products, including oil, to the US.
