BuyBlue.org is coming back!
I received the following in an E-mail message:

Hello Conscientious Consumers!

By popular demand…BuyBlue is coming back, and we are coming out swinging!
My name is Sarah, and I’m helping drive the relaunch of BuyBlue. I hope you'll let me take a minute to update you about our long-term plans for BuyBlue, and our short-term plans of helping to crush the lying, bloviating, perverted Bill O’Reilly. Sounds like fun, no? I certainly think so!

BuyBlue 2.0 – Coming Fall 2007

You are all familiar with BuyBlue.org and it’s mission of rewarding companies that have a triple bottom line of people, planet and profit by providing company ratings based on political contributions data. The new BuyBlue will continue to keep Americans up-to-date on how to best vote with their wallets by supporting companies that support progressive candidates and legislation. But we have some exciting new things in store as well…

Power of the Progressive

We plan to be much more partisan and focused in our efforts by running programs that are geared towards specific industries, companies, and seasonal shopping trends. Also, with a prospective Democratic majority for the next few cycles, we can also more effectively zero in on businesses that insist on feeding the conservative agenda and sponsoring conservative media. We are very excited about the effect directed action campaigns could have, but we need your help to make it happen.

In the meantime

BuyBlue has picked the ripe time to come back to the fray. I’m sure you’ve heard about the ongoing battle between the progressive netroots and Bill O’Reilly over the YearlyKos Convention. Here are a few of the typical enraging quotes Bill spews in his "No-Spin-Zone" on cable tv every night:

  • On dailykos: "The hate this website traffics in rivals the KKK and Nazi websites."
  • On San Fransisco: "And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."
  • On the UN: "I just wish Katrina had only hit the United Nations building, nothing else, just had flooded them out, and I wouldn't have rescued them."
  • To "Daily Show" host John Stewart: "You know what’s really frightening? You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it’s true. You’ve got stoned slackers watching your dopey show every night and they can vote."

Join us in helping to fight back! Brave New Films has a tool that lets you help track and put pressure on Bill’s advertisers: http://bravenewfilms.org/foxads Combined with the already growing momentum behind this effort, we can strangle the advertising lifeblood of the neo-con docket that is Fox News. If enough of us let these companies know that we will not buy their goods until they drop their ads, we can send the message that people power plus buying power is a force to be reckoned with. At BuyBlue, we will continue to contribute to the growing momentum of netroots activism. Help us inaugurate BuyBlue v2.0 by contributing to this cause while it is still in the spotlight!

<snip>

See you at YearlyKos!

Thanks again for your time, I am excited and humbled to be part of the next phase of such an exciting and critical organization. If you happen to be attending the YearlyKos Convention in Chicago this week, be sure to stop by the BuyBlue booth to chat, give me your ideas and pick up a BuyBlue button!

Talk to you soon!

- Sarah at BuyBlue.org

6. Gotta tell ya.
Bought the book, use the book, think BuyBlue was incredibly effective instrument for change. More more more. Hope it can be made ultra-user-friendly, more businesses, more categories, expand to listing local businesses, and stay scientifically progressive about it.

I'm so excited about this. I think BuyBlue is so important. I've missed it terribly.

Was it Adam Smith -- the all-knowing consumer brings about the most effective social change --

YES!
