There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.

Sadly it's just as true for elected officials as for everyone else. Yeah, you tried in advance to tell them, but they ignored you, cuz they hadn't yet peed on the fence for themselves. The results were predictable: as Uncle Will used to say

When ignorance gets started it knows no bounds.

and

If we ever pass out as a great nation we ought to put on our tombstone, America died from a delusion that she has moral leadership.

Uncle Will thought he knew how to keep us out of the next one

I have a scheme for stopping war. It's this - no nation is allowed to enter a war till they have paid for the last one.

Something like could even work for getting us out of the current one. There is, of course, the problem that Uncle Will noticed

Democrats never agree on anything, that's why they're Democrats. If they agreed with each other, they would be Republicans.

So we need some way to pressure them. Maybe a good slogan would help, something like Uncle Will's

If Stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?

But if a slogans don't work, Uncle Will had another idea that would at least make a fun petition or polling question:

There ought to be one day - just one - when there is open season on senators.

Uncle Will was his own man, and you'll never agree with everything he said. But it may help to remember you're not the first person who felt this way.
